15:25] Socks: Okay: her mom died in childbirth, and her dad disappeared, so she's an orphan. Whether she's living in an orphanage or with her mom's family is up to you.  Pretty normal girl growing up, but very...protective of anyone she considered a friend.  Adolescence would bring some changes in addition to the normal ones: a pronounced affinity for fire.  She could probably put her hand straight in a fireplace and it would take a long time for it to hurt.  (hair and clothes will still burn right off though; they're a little more fragile)  Maybe more of a temper, and when she gets mad, she starts to feel hot. (not in the sexy way)

Beyond that, do as you like with her. :)  Physical appearance isn't important, nor is location or who she's living with currently.

[15:43] arynwyn: <It's early morning and the city is just coming alive. The market's just opened and there are only a few shoppers about, but one of them is a fiery red-haired young woman with pale skin and freckles dashed across her nose and cheeks. She's got a basket on one arm, with a little bit of produce already in it, and a coin purse tied to her belt. She stops at a stall selling fresh fruit and begins to browse>
[15:49] Socks: <The stall owner eyes her closely, in case she decides to steal something.  Someone at the stall next to her has the hood of their black leather cloak up over their face.  The hood turns in her direction, looks back at the stall's wares...then looks over to her again.  The face within is shrouded.  The figure stops moving completely, hood still turned in her direction>  
Stall owner: <to the girl> You want a nice apple?  Or I got some lovely grapes, just 5 silver a bunch. <smile smile customer service smile>
[15:51] arynwyn: <tsks> Come now, Mr. Parish. We go through this every morning. You know I can't pay more than 2 silver a bunch or Madame Hart will have my hide. <Madame Hart is, as Mr. Parish knows, the matron of the orphanage. She smiles> Albert asked specifically for oranges today, though. Do you have any good ones? <peering at the oranges and poking through them>
[15:57] Socks: Mr. Parish: You're ruining me, I'm telling you.  2 silver a bunch...  <shaking his head.  To anyone who didn't know him, he'd sound cross, but she probably knows it's good-natured grumping> Albert's a spoiled brat, is what Albert is.  <pulls up a small bag and hands it to her: there are three very nice oranges and some good grapes in there> 5 silver and a smile for the bag.  I set it aside for you special. <there might be a smile there...in his eyes.  His mouth seems to be permanently stuck in scowl-mode>
<The hooded person steps closer but doesn't say anything or approach her>
[15:59] arynwyn: <beams at him and hands over 5 silver> Thanks, Mr. Parish! The Lord will bless you for your kindess to poor orphans. <she starts to leave and in doing so, turns and spots the man in the hood> G'morning, sir. <though she eyes him warily>
[16:03] Socks: <The hood swivels quickly to her left, to the alleyway.  The hood swings back to her and the person TACKLES her - just as a large fireball of immense heat blasts through the air where she had been standing.  Mr. Parish barely has time to scream before he is reduced to ash; the heat from the fire is INTENSE.  Something within her probably tells her she would not survive sticking her hand in THIS flame.  People are, of course, shrieking in horror and fleeing; the man atop her pushes back off of her as soon as the fireball is over head and moves to stand between her and the alleyway>
[16:06] arynwyn: <Coughs, as the air was knocked out of her by the tackle, and blinks confusedly> What the bloody hell was THAT?! <she scrambles to her feet and ignores the produce that fell out of her basket and is now rolling around. She gazes toward the alleyway, stepping closer to the man that saved her>
[16:09] Socks: <He throws an arm out to keep her back, but slowly lowers his arm.  He turns to her, pushing his hood back.  He has very black hair brushing his shoulders, and his cold gray eyes evaluate her> Pick up your fruit.  Hurry.  He's gone for now, but we need not to be here when he returns with more of them.
[16:10] arynwyn: <she studies him for about two seconds, then starts to gather her goods back into her basket as told. It doesn't take long as she didn't have much yet>
[16:12] Socks: Come on. <he says gruffly.  Oh, and I blame Joe again: he's well-dressed, rich blue silk tunic over black leather pants and boots.  He takes her by the arm and hurries her along the now empty streets> Are you injured in anyway, miss? <he asks in a tone that doesn't sound concerned so much as he's reading down a list>
[16:13] arynwyn: No. Just... shaken up. <she follows after him, glancing back at the alley and the market as they go> Mr. Parish...
[16:15] Socks: Unfortunate, but no point crying over it now.  <he pushes her down a side alley> Cut through here.  We need to get to the compound.
[16:16] arynwyn: <she tugs her arm free> Wait! Just... wait! <she looks back again, confused and terrified> What the hell is going on?
[16:18] Socks: How long have you been in the city? <he asks, stopping and turning to her>
[16:19] arynwyn: Me? My whole life. I... I'm an orphan, I have nowhere else to go.
[16:20] Socks: <he swears virulently>  Well, it'll be some comfort to know they didn't find you until now either.  We have to get you to safety, or they're going to incinerate you the same way they did Mr. Parish.
[16:21] arynwyn: <her look of fear turns to one of indignancy> Who are they? And who are you?
[16:22] Socks: Later. <grabs her arm and starts hauling again>

((He's pretty strong, but if she really wants to, she can break free.))
[16:23] arynwyn: <jerks her arm away and plants her feet> Don't "Later" me! I'm not a child. And I'm not naive enough to be hauled away to some obscure location by a man I don't know!
[16:25] Socks: <he sighs heavily> They are bloodsworn mages of the Silver dragons.  I am a bloodsworn of the Blue dragons, and I am taking you to safety. <he folds his arms> Happy now?  Can we go? <he asks, knowing already that she's not going to just say "Oh, why didn't you say so? Okay, let's go!">
[16:26] arynwyn: <blinks> Mages? Why do they want to kill me? I'm not a mage!
[16:27] Socks: No. <he replies evenly> You're a halfblood Blue dragon.  And we have been searching for you for nearly 2 decades.
[16:28] arynwyn: <blinks again, then shakes her head> You're insane. Raving mad. <she turns and starts to go back the way they came>
[16:28] Socks: <he grabs her arm> You leave my company and you will be incinerated.  You cannot withstand dragonfire.
[16:29] arynwyn: ...dragonfire? <arching a brow>
[16:31] Socks: No fire burns as hot and strong as dragonfire.  And that which the bloodsworn use is nothing compared to what an actual dragon can unleash.  But it's still enough to melt the flesh from your pretty face and char your bones.  Now if you don't want to die, you will COME WITH ME! <it's the first time he's sounded at all emotional; of course the emotion in question is "frustration">
[16:32] arynwyn: <she hesitates a few moments, then nods, sighing> You will explain everything to me when we get to this... safe place.
[16:34] Socks: <he nods> Of course.  <He might sound a little....deferential?>  We need to hurry. <back to push/pulling her along>
[16:35] arynwyn: <she comes along quietly this time, though careful to memorize the streets they use in case she has to make a run for it>
[16:37] Socks: <A couple of blocks away, he stops in front of a large house behind walls with an odd gate.  There's no obvious lock, just a large plate.  He presses his hand to the plate and it glows.  She can feel the magic of the thing - in fact, almost everything around them tingles of magic.  The gates swing open to admit them, and clang! closed as soon as they are on the other side>
[16:38] arynwyn: <glances back at the clang! uneasily and shifts her basket to her other arm, but the feeling of the magic keeps her quiet>
[16:41] Socks: <He leads her to the front door, which he holds open for her - no unlocking, apparently.  Inside is a VERY nice home, like nobles would have.  A butler comes up> Jennings, tell Mother we'll have one more for dinner.  And have a guest room made up.  I'll need to talk with Father when he's not busy.  <the butler nods and leaves>  Miss, this way if you would? <he indicates a parlor and heads that way> We can sit and discuss things more comfortably.  <he's removing his cloak>
[16:42] arynwyn: <feels like a field mouse lost in a mansion, she follows him, looking around with wide-eyes. She keeps her basket close, as if it would protect her from the prying eyes of the rich>
[16:44] Socks: <The parlor has beautiful paintings, a fireplace that is currently cold and quiet, and comfy chairs.  He indicates a chair for her and sits in one opposite her, draping his cloak over the back of it> What is your name?
[16:45] arynwyn: <sits down with her basket in her lap, looking uncomfortable> Riona. <she fidgets with a string tied to the handle of the basket>
[16:47] Socks: <he waits a moment, then nods to himself> Ah, of course, you wouldn't have known the surname your father used.  <he clears his throat> I believe he generally used Danvers.
[16:48] arynwyn: Riona: What happened to him?
[16:50] Socks: He died.  In battle with the Silvers.  It was known that he had taken a human for a mate, but he hadn't told anyone her name or where she was; he believed it was for her protection.  We also knew his mate was expecting.  When he died, we started trying to find you.  <something occurs to him> Where is your mother?
[16:51] arynwyn: Riona: <looks down at her hands> She died in childbirth.
[16:52] Socks: ...I'm sorry. <he sounds genuinely sympathetic>  That's not terribly surprising, but I am sorry for it.  She probably couldn't handle birthing a halfblood.  Carrying you must've been...hard on her.  But it is proof of her love for you and for him that she went through with it.  <he reaches over to pat her hand>
[16:53] arynwyn: Riona: <she pulls away from the pat and steels her spine> So, who are you?
[16:55] Socks: My name is Daniel Vane.  As I told you, I am a bloodsworn mage of the Blue flight, as is most of my family.  I cannot apologize enough for not being able to find you.  <shakes his head in disappointment at himself> You were so close to us, all this time...
[16:55] arynwyn: Riona: What does that mean, exactly? Bloodsworn mage of the Blue flight? 
[17:00] Socks: Daniel: People have families; dragons have flights.  I am in the Vane family; your father was in the Blue flight.  Not all flights are hostile to each other, but the Blues and the Silvers have a rivalry going back centuries.  A dragon fighting another dragon is an incredibly destructive thing, and, more than that, dragons are still hunted and feared by the majority of the populace.  They can take human form, but it limits their powers, and being creatures of such incredible magical power, any decent mage could find them out with a glance.  So they have humans as...servants, essentially.  We have sworn a blood oath to them and they to us.  They protect us, teach us powerful magics, and we help them as we are able.  We are their...ambassadors to the human world, essentially.
[17:01] arynwyn: Riona: ... ... ...wait. You're saying my father was a dragon?
[17:01] Socks: Daniel: <nods> Yes.
[17:02] arynwyn: Riona: That... that doesn't make any sense. <she shakes her head, looking puzzled> 
[17:04] Socks: Daniel: Well, certainly, I've never heard of a dragon taking a human mate, but I don't really try to understand dragons.  I just do as I'm told.  My father has been looking for you for a long time; I have also tried my hand at searching for you and failed.  <he shakes his head>  The flight's been very worried about you.
[17:05] arynwyn: Riona: Why? I'm nothing special. I'm not a dragon.
[17:09] Socks: Daniel: You're a halfblood.  And they have two very excellent reasons to want to know where you are: firstly, you are half-dragon, unaware of your powers and what they could do or how to control them.  You might've incinerated someone accidentally or something.  And secondly, and more important to them, you are partially of the Blue flight.  And that makes you a target to the Silvers.  If they'd found you first, they would've stopped at nothing to destroy you.  You should be protected and taught.
[17:09] arynwyn: Riona: Taught.... what, exactly? I can't do anything special. <Except stick my hand in fire without getting hurt...>
[17:12] Socks: Daniel: <he smirks> You have the capability to be a better mage than I am.
[17:13] arynwyn: Riona: <she frowns> I think I'd know if I could shoot fireballs out of my hands. <holding her hands up as if letting him inspect them>
[17:15] Socks: Daniel: You wouldn't because no one has taught you how.  Come. <he stands> I'll show you.
[17:17] arynwyn: Riona: I can't. <she stands up> I have to get back to the orphange or Madame Hart will worry, and the children won't have their breakfast. <indicating the basket> As nice as your fairytale sounds and as much as I want to be special... <she shakes her hea> I have a life and responsibilities. No one has "found" me until now, I'm sure I can stay hidden. <She gives a little curtsy> Thank you for saving me, though, sir. 
[17:18] Socks: Daniel: Saving you.  Yes, from a Silver bloodsworn who'd found you also.  They know what you look like now, and they know where your neighborhood is.  <he steps in close to her, grabbing her bicep - though not tightly, more to get her attention.  He says tightly> If you go back to that orphanage, you are endangering everyone there.  If they track you there, they will burn the entire building down and incinerate anyone who runs out.
[17:22] arynwyn: Riona: <she blinks, looking horrified> ...they wouldn't...
[17:24] Socks: Daniel: Yes, they would.  They have before, they will again.  If you care for those people, you must not go back there.
[17:26] arynwyn: Riona: <she sighs, looking sad> Then you need to take this there and give Madame Hart some sort of excuse. <she unties the coin purse and drops it into the basket, then holds it out for him> And I'll need my clothes, books... <seems rather out of sorts now>
[17:32] Socks: Daniel: <he nods> I will come up with something.  
Ohhhh, we have a guest!  <a young woman about Riona's age sweeps up in a gorgeous blue silk dress.  Her black hair is curled and drapes over her fair shoulders becomingly.  Her gray eyes are warmer than Daniel's but they are obviously siblings.  She peers at Riona, smiling> Danny, are you finally getting married?  Say it's true, I'm dying for a sister! 
Daniel: <seems annoyed> Maddy, behave yourself.  This is Riona Danvers.  <he says significantly>
Madelaine: DANVERS?  As in....? <standing up straighter.  When her brother nods, she beams> Oh Father will be THRILLED!!  <she beams at Riona and curtseys as if for visiting royalty> A pleasure to meet you, Miss.  I'm Madelaine Vane.
Daniel: I have to run an errand for Miss Danvers; perhaps you could entertain her in my absence?  She may still have questions.
Madelaine: Of course!  My pleasure.  
Daniel: <leans in towards Riona to whisper> Do not let her have anything sugary while I'm gone; she'll be bouncing off the ceiling.  <he then steps back to a proper distance, bows courteously and takes her basket and coin purse with him as he heads for the door>

[17:35] arynwyn: Riona: <feeling more and more like the field mouse, she returns the curtsey, though far less eloquently. She blushes deeply and manages only a faint smile> Uh, it's very nice to meet you. <clears her throat awkwardly>
[17:37] Socks: Madelaine: <latches on to her arm> Not half as nice as it is to meet you.  Please say you'll stay with us, for the night at least?  I mean, I'm sure the flight'll want to spirit you away to wherever they live, but you have to stay with us until then.  PLEASE? <like a little kid begging for a pony> I am the only girl here, aside from Mother and the servants, and I am simply languishing for feminine company.  <pouts at Riona as if she might refuse>
[17:40] arynwyn: Riona: I... <she blinks, unused to being treated with such enthusiasm> Okay? I don't really know what's going on, to be honest. <faint, please-understand smile> Your... brother? dragged me here after I was nearly killed at the market. <she shakes her head> I'm still rather confused about this whole thing.
[17:41] Socks: Madelaine: Ooh, a run-in with the Silvers? Come, you have to tell me the whole thing, Father won't let me out.  We'll have tea and cakes! <tugging her down a hallway>
[17:42] arynwyn: Riona: <follows along> Your father won't let you out? <arching a brow>
[17:43] Socks: Madelaine: Says it's far too dangerous for me.  I'm not much of a mage, really; never paid attention to those stuffy tutors.  If I do go out, Daniel or one of my other brothers has to come with me. <pouts> Do you know what it's like to be the only girl amongst 6 children?!  And the youngest to boot.
[17:45] arynwyn: Riona: No, I can't say I know what that's like. <faint smile> What do you do all day here, then? 
[17:49] Socks: Madelaine: Go batty, is what I do. <they come into a kitchen where the cooks are just pulling some fresh little cakes out of the oven> When I can't play piano, anyway.  Cooooooook! <she relinquishes Riona and dashes to one of the cooks, a plump elderly woman who pays no mind to the girl throwing her arms about her> 
Cook: You're not getting any.  Your mother's expecting the mayor's wife and a few other nice ladies over for tea, and these're for them.  Besides, you know how you get.
Madelaine: <pouts> But we have a guest!  A very important one!  And she needs a proper tea and it's just not a proper tea without cakes!
Cook: <turns and looks at Riona.  She eyes the dress Riona's wearing and then looks at Madelaine again> Miss, your guest is very nice, I'm sure.  But you'll have your usual tea unless your parents say otherwise.  <she looks back to Riona and nods> Nice to meet you, Miss.
[17:50] arynwyn: Riona: <she returns the nod> Cakes aren't really necessary, Miss Vane... <feeling even more awkward after the cook eyes her>
[17:51] Socks: Cook: <to Riona> Do you take tea, miss?  We give the young mistress here hot water and lemon to cut down on her sugar intake.
Madelaine: <letting go of Cook and folding her arms> Mean things.
[17:51] arynwyn: Riona: Water and lemon is fine, thank you.
[17:53] Socks: Cook: <nods and looks back at Madelaine> Miss, you and your guest go on now; we're busy and... 
<One of the junior cooks trips on something and the tray of cakes she was holding flies out of her hands...and heads for Riona>
[17:55] arynwyn: Riona: <catches the pan, managing to save all but two cakes>

Jr. Cook: I'm so sorry, Miss!  I...<moves to take the pan from her and then realizes that Riona has no cloth in her hands while she's holding the tray (as the jr. cook does, to protect her from the heat of the pan)>
Cook: Well get the tray from her! <berating the junior cook>
Jr. Cook: Yes'm! <taking the tray sheepishly>
Cook: <nods much more pleasantly at Riona> Thank you, Miss.  I'm sorry for her clumsiness.
[17:59] arynwyn: Riona: I've dropped my share of pans. <smiles at the jr. cook to show no harm done, trying to discreetly hide her unharmed hands behind her back>
[18:00] Socks: Cook: We'll bring your tea 'round.  Go on then. <gently shooing Madelaine out>
Madelaine: We'll take it in the drawing room; I want to play for my new friend!  Come on! <she grabs Riona's hand on the way out and tugs>

[18:02] Socks: Madelaine: So mean, not letting me have sugar.  I only burned a FEW things last time. <she sulks as they walk>

[18:03] Socks: Madelaine: I tend to get a little hyper and I get a little silly and then I end up burning something with what power I do have.  <she rolls her eyes> They always make such a fuss over it.

Madelaine: <stops> You mean you've never done any?
[18:08] arynwyn: Riona: Me? Goodness no. <laughing> What sort of magic would I do?
[18:12] Socks: Madelaine: Well, fire, obviously.  But draconic reservoirs are nearly endless; you could pretty much do whatever you wanted, with the right training.  <she leads her into the drawing room.  It looks much like the parlor, except there's a piano, which she hurries to> Do you like any composers in particular?  I can play nearly all of them.
[18:12] arynwyn: Riona: <she sits down in an empty chair> I don't know much about music, so play whatever you'd like. <smile>
[18:16] Socks: Madelaine: <sits on the bench and plays a lovely melody, light and chipper and twinkling.  The near-manic energy of her seems to soothe and ebb as she plays, evening out instead of being jagged and spiky and hyper>
<A maid brings in a tray.  She sets it on a table near Riona, curtseys and leaves.  The tray has a teapot of hot water, two china cups on saucers, each with two slices of lemon in the bottom of them, a bowl with some extra lemon slices, a platter of warm, soft rolls and a small crock of fresh butter>

[18:23] Socks: Madelaine: Well, dragons take things rather seriously.  And we don't know why, honestly; they haven't seen fit to tell us.  <she shrugs, pouring water into her cup.  She takes a roll, tears a piece off, and butters it> But they do want to wipe each other completely out of existence over whatever it is. <nom>
[18:25] arynwyn: Riona: <sighs a little and sips her lemon-water> Just what I needed. People who want to kill me for a reason I'll never know. <she shakes her head> If I hadn't seen that fireball this morning, I would never have believed any of this. <she shivers a little> Poor Mr. Parish...

[18:28] arynwyn: Riona: I had just purchased some fruit from him... I go every day - he gives me the best deals. I turned to leave and the next thing I know I'm being tackled by your brother and Mr. Parish is a pile of ash. <sighs> It was horrific.
[18:29] Socks: Madelaine: <shivers> Sometimes I'm kind of glad not to be out when there're things like that going on.  <she reaches over to rest a hand on Riona's> I'm so sorry.  
[18:30] arynwyn: Riona: I just wish I understood why... <sips, then shrugs> Do you know how they found me? And your brother? I was doing the same thing I do every morning.
[18:33] Socks: Madelaine: <she shakes her head> I don't know a thing about how they would've found you.  But Cook's short handed today, and needed something picked up from the market.  Father's had Danny cooped up, studying for his exams, and so he sort of leapt at the chance to get outside for a bit. <she chuckles> Normally a servant would've gone to the market; I guess it's a good thing that didn't happen today.

Her room is upstairs, at the end of the hall - past the doorway where Daniel is waiting, eyebrow arched at Maddy as she hauls their guest around - across the way (so, opposite wall)> You just knock once and come on in when you're done resting, okay? 
[22:53] arynwyn: Riona: <she nods> Sure. <she smiles a little, still feeling dumb, then turns to go to her own room>
[23:05] Socks: Daniel: <steps aside to let her in> You realize she's going to turn you into her own living doll, right? <Heeeeeeee might be smirking? It's hard to tell> But here you are; I know it's a bit on the small side, but I hope it will be adequate for you.
<The room is considered small?  There's a queen-sized bed with sky blue satin sheets and a golden colored velvet blanket.  The four-poster has curtains as well, in gauzy white - currently they've been tied to the posts with gold and blue tasselled cords.  At the end of a bed is a padded bench - the cushion done in a rich royal blue.  There's an armoire with a mirror inside one of the doors to the right of the bed as you look at it, and a matching washbasin & pitcher stand next to that, with soft, fluffy towels hanging on the bar.  To the left of the bed as you stand in the doorway is a huge overstuffed chair in a gold-white-blue checked pattern (yet tasteful).  It's positioned near one of the windows that are on either side of the bed - they have white gauzy curtains over them and then a second set of dark blue curtains over those that are currently tied back to let in light.  Next to the chair is a small stone fireplace, with a mantle and screen.  There are artful little figurines - some dragons and some human - on the mantle.  Naturally there is a poker and a basket with logs and kindling in it.  There are nightstands either side of the bed, and someone has thoughtfully brought in a bud vase with a single pink rose in it to set on one of the nightstands (the one on the left, if it matters).  There are fur rugs on the floor, luxurious and soft.>
[23:07] arynwyn: Riona: <she stands there a minute, gazing around, then takes a step back> ... ...is there perhaps a broom closet I can sleep in instead? <trying to joke, but her eyes are wide and apprehensive>
[23:07] Socks: Daniel: <blinks> Is something wrong? <he sounds perhaps a tinge worried, as if they've offended her somehow>
[23:09] arynwyn: Riona: <chuckles faintly> No, there's nothing wrong, except I feel like a lost kitten adopted by a princess... <she clears her throat and goes inside, turning to look at him, clutching her bag> Do I look like I fit in here? <rueful smile>
[23:10] Socks: Daniel: <eases down and considers this question.  He walks into the room and circles her, eyeing her up and down> Well, doubtless Madelaine will do something about your dress and hair.  And I think once that's taken care of, yes. <stops circling> You will look like you fit in here. <yeah, okay, his tone hasn't changed, but he is clearly teasing - you can see it in his eyes>
[23:11] arynwyn: Riona: <snorts> Right. <she tosses her bag on the floor and goes over to the bed to feel the fabric> This is... <flops down on it facefirst and groans> heaven. 
[23:12] Socks: Daniel: <smirks since she's not looking at him to see it> Rest.  And do not worry about whether you "look" like you fit in here.  You will be fine.  
[23:13] arynwyn: Riona: <she turns her head enough to smile at him, then kicks off her shoes and curls up on the soft bedding>
[23:13] Socks: Daniel: Doubtless Madelaine is informing the staff of her wish to play dress up with you; they will come and make sure you are awake in time.
[23:14] arynwyn: Riona: That's probably best, since I'm considering sleeping here for the rest of my life. <looking blissful with her eyes closed and smiling>
[23:16] Socks: Daniel: <his smirk softens a little, but then he makes himself straighten his expression out> My sister will never let that happen.  Rest well, miss. <he bows, even if she isn'tlooking, and exits>

[23:25] Socks: <Mr. Vane is a severe looking man whose black hair is graying at the temple to go with his eyes.  Yet when he smiles, it softens his face up quite a bit, and he smiles every time he looks at Riona - a sort of relieved sigh of a smile, contentment at a job finally completed.  Mrs. Vane also has black hair, though her eyes are a light blue, and very piercing.  She is friendly and cordial and talks a great deal.  
The food is, of course, exquisite: roast pheasant, herb-baked potatoes, steamed and buttered vegetables.  Wine and water, and a fruit tart for dessert.  The table is huge, which only serves to underscore how many of the family are not with them: there's room for 10 yet there are only half that many present.>



[13:50] arynwyn: So, did we have anything specific over dinner we needed to do?
[13:51] Socks: Only one quick thing and it doesn't need to be *done* so much as mentioned, so I can gloss over it.

[13:54] Socks: <Over dinner, Mr. Vane (the father, not Daniel) tells Riona that the Queen of the Blue flight is coming tomorrow to meet her.  He's quite excited about this and completely oblivious that such a statement might be intimidating.  Maddy gets giddy (or, rather, giddiER) hearing this, and Daniel arches an eyebrow as he eats.>

[13:55] arynwyn: Riona: <nods, looking slightly terrified. It should be noted that she's hardly touched any of the food. And considering she missed breakfast, slept through lunch, and had only a bite of roll at tea, she should be ravenous>

[13:59] Socks: <no answer.  Clearly she's a deep sleeper. ((<coughs>))>

[14:00] arynwyn: Riona: <creeps foward, trembling. There's a flash of lightning and a loud bang and Riona jumps, squeals, and dashes for "Maddy's" bed> Maddy! 
[14:01] Socks: Daniel: Huhwha? <rolls over, sitting up and rubbing at one of his eyes.  He doesn't seem to be wearing a shirt...which is normal for someone in bed.  His hair's sleep-mussed and he's not really awake yet> 
[14:03] arynwyn: Riona: <she stops with one knee in the bed> Oh! <but then there's another clash of thunder and she dives into the bed anyway, hiding under the blankets. She's trembling from head to foot>
[14:04] Socks: Daniel: <maybe she can't tell under there, but he doesn't exactly wear pants to bed either, just his underwear.  He scoots to one side away from her at the sudden motion> What is going on? <lifting the covers to peer underneath>
[14:05] arynwyn: Riona: I'm sorry! I thought this was M-Maddy's room! <not that she's going anywhere> I hate storms! <she's got her head buried under a pillow so her voice is muffled a bit>
[14:07] Socks: Daniel: Miss Danvers.  <he rubs at both eyes with one hand and sighs> It's only a storm.  It can't get you.  And you are safe here.  <he hesitates a moment, then pats her back reassuringly>
[14:10] arynwyn: Riona: Um, right. <she clears her throat and tries to disentangle herself from the pillow and blankets. She climbs out of the bed slowly (and she's wearing this, only in undyed cotton - http://www.vintagetextile.com/images/Thumbnails/2160thumb2.jpg  ) and starts toward the door on rubbery legs. There's another, especially loud, crack of thunder and she flings herself to the floor, arms covering her head, shaking violently>
[14:12] Socks: Daniel: <sighs and gets up.  He pulls his robe off the end of the bed and slips it on, tying it as he approaches her> Come here then. <he kneels next to her, rubbing her back soothingly> 
[14:13] arynwyn: Riona: <practically tackles him, wrapping her arms around him in a death grip and burying her face in his shoulder, still trembling>
[14:15] Socks: Daniel: Shhh, shhh, it's okay.  <He pets her hair and pats her back and manages to sound vaguely comforting> Come on, let's stand up and we'll go see Maddy, hm?  She's just next door.
[14:16] arynwyn: Riona: <sniffs a little and stands up wobbily> You must think I'm a terrible coward... <still clinging to him for dear life>
[14:18] Socks: Daniel: We all have fears, and it is not for me to judge you.  <he paws at his door until he has it open enough for them to pass, then walks with her out into the hallway> The storm is mostly sound and fury though.  It cannot hurt you in here.  We would not allow it.  <still petting her hair>
[14:19] arynwyn: Riona: I know it can't hurt me it just... <shudders as thunder runbles, but it's further away and not as loud> scares me...
[14:21] Socks: Daniel: You are safer here than you have ever been before.  <escorting her to Maddy's door> But you know, you will never conquer your fears if you do not face up to them.
[14:22] arynwyn: Riona: That's what Madame Hart always told me... <sounds defeated and embarrassed> I'm sorry.
[14:24] Socks: Daniel: There is nothing to be sorry for.  And Madame Hart sounds very wise...her misunderstanding about us aside. <clears his throat>

Madelaine: <rolling over in bed to see who it is> Oh, Riona!  What's wrong? <sitting up in her silk nightgown>
[14:32] arynwyn: Riona: <goes over to climb into bed with Maddy, looking embarrassed. She pulls the covers over her head and says quietly> I hate storms.
[14:33] Socks: Maddy: Oh, you poor dear. <pats the Riona-bed-lump reassuringly> And how did my brother get involved in this?
Daniel: Good night, ladies. <he says instead>

Daniel: Go to SLEEP, Maddy. <there's the sound of the door clicking shut>
Maddy: I think you have to marry him now that you've seen him mostly naked.  That's the way it should work anyway. 
[14:37] arynwyn: Riona: I didn't see anything! My head was under the pillow! And when I got up, he already had his robe on.

[17:49] Socks: <The next morning - not long before lunch - the Queen of the Blue flight arrives in a splendid carriage.  The servants had spent the morning in a panicked flurry, under the orders and watchful eye of Mrs. Vane.  Maddy has been giggly and happy; Daniel has been strangely absent.  Upon hearing that her carriage has pulled up, everyone assembles in the front hall.  Daniel's not wearing his cloak, but he otherwise looks exactly as he did yesterday - though his hair is perhaps a little better brushed.  Everyone's wearing their Sunday best (not to be confused with their BEST best, strangely), and Mrs. Vane is double-checking everything, sure she's missed something that's out of place.
The woman who comes in looks to be MAYBE ten years older than Riona herself, but she carries herself with such grace and poise and there is an ancientness to her blue eyes.  She has her blonde hair curled and piled decorously atop her head. Daniel is holding Maddy down with a hand on her shoulder because she looks like she might bounce off the ceiling for joy otherwise.  The queen is flanked by two men in livery - blue and gold, of course, with black breeches and boots.  Everyone bows/curtseys to her>

[17:53] arynwyn: Riona: <she curtsies with the rest of them, feeling like she's meeting the Queen of England rather than some obscure queen that she's never heard of. She's recoiled the curls with Maddy's help. She tries to blend in with everyone else though she knows that won't last long>
[17:54] Socks: Queen Azure: <eyes Riona> This is the child?
Mr. Vane: Yes, m'lady.  Riona Danvers.  <smiles eagerly>
Queen Azure: Come forward, lass, let me see your face.
[17:56] arynwyn: Riona: <she glances at Maddy uncertainly, then steps forward, clasping her shaking hands in front of her>
[18:00] Socks: Queen Azure: <reaches out and, cupping Riona's chin, lifts her head up so she can examine her face.  Her own expression is unreadable> She looks nothing like Cobalt. <She says dismissively.  Her eyes snap to Mr. Vane> What are you trying to pull, Vane?
Mr. Vane: <blinks in surprise> She is...
Queen Azure: Your mistake, Reginald.  And she knows far too much now.  <waves a dismissive hand at Riona, still looking at Mr. Vane> Incinerate her.
Daniel: <blink blink>
Maddy: What?
Mr. Vane: <seems confused by the order> M'lady, are you serious?
Queen Azure: Do I sound serious?  Incinerate her now, Vane, or I'll do it - and I'll burn your children along with her. <raising a hand towards Maddy as if ready to cast the spell herself>
[18:02] arynwyn: Riona: <as terrified as she is of the woman and the order she gives, Riona steps in front of Maddy protectively> Do what you must to me but leave Maddy and Daniel alone.
[18:05] Socks: Queen Azure: <suddenly the entire mood in the air shifts as she breaks into a wide smile> There it is.  <she pulls Riona in abruptly for a fierce hug> Oh, there is Cobalt's spirit in you, you wonderful, wonderful child!
Daniel: ...that was a test?
Queen Azure: Well, to be fair, she does look nothing like him. <she says, finally releasing Riona to look at her again> Forgive me, my dear.  <looks to Mrs. Vane>And do forgive me Charlotte, for worrying you so; but you know I would never ever incinerate your children.  Especially not Maddy, she's my favorite. <winks at Madelaine>
Maddy: <beams and whaps Azure lightly on the arm> That was mean.  I almost believed you!
Mr. Vane: <looks like he might faint in relief>
[18:06] arynwyn: Riona: <extremely confused and wanting to pass out in relief, she sort of half-returns the hug then escapes back to Maddy's side, standing closer to her than before>
[18:10] Socks: Maddy: See? I told you she was nice.
Queen Azure: I could do with some tea, and after that scare, I daresay Miss Riona could as well.  In the parlor, so Maddy can play for us?  Daniel, you're coming with as well.
Daniel: <bows> Of course, m'lady.
Maddy: <squeals and dashes off to the parlor>
Queen Azure: Come, my dear.  I am so terribly sorry to have threatened you, but I assure you, it was all make-believe.  I wanted to provoke your father's essence in you - and didn't I ever! <she laughs.  The liveried men stay behind as she starts to head down the hallway after Maddy> Daniel, did you feel that spike?
Daniel: I believe my confusion overwhelmed my training, m'lady.  Please forgive me.
Queen Azure: Bah, so serious all the time.  Like Turq.  I swear, sometimes I don't think that male is my own hatchling.  But <resuming speaking to Riona> the draconic nature in your blood leapt up.  If you knew magic, you could be a very nasty threat, my dear.  But then, given your heritage, that's hardly surprising.
Maddy: <already playing her piano>
[18:11] arynwyn: Riona: <casts around for something to say to this woman she's not sure she likes> You knew my father, ma'am?
[18:14] Socks: Queen Azure: <she's quite friendly now> Knew him?  Oh yes.  I loved Cobalt, quite dearly.  I wanted him to be my consort, but he refused.  It was his choice.  <she sighs> But what could've been....ah, well.  My current consort makes me quite happy.  And - I want to be clear on this - I am not the jealous type.  I wanted Cobalt's happiness more than anything, and your mother made him so very happy.  <she smiles at the memory>
[18:14] arynwyn: Riona: <stifles a sad sigh, nodding> What happened to him?
[18:17] Socks: Queen Azure: <she takes a seat in the parlor and smooths out her skirt> He was killed.  He believed there was a threat to both the Blue flight and to his mate and her soon-to-be-born child - you, as it turns out.  He went out to face it, and he was overwhelmed, we believe.  The daft fool went alone...<she shakes her head sadly>  And when we found him, it was clear there'd been more than one assailant.  But then the Silvers could not handle a Blue in a fair fight.
Daniel: <taking a chair a respectful distance away from the queen> That's why they don't fight fair.
[18:18] arynwyn: Riona: <takes a third chair and, this time, does sigh> I wish he hadn't.
[18:21] Socks: Queen Azure: As do I.  As do we all - we have searched for you everywhere since his death.  He never told anyone except me that he was even expecting a child, and he wouldn't tell me his mate's name or where she was.  He believed there was a traitor in the Blue flight, you see, and we have searched and investigated and turned up NOTHING.  <she nods at the maid who brings in the tea tray>
Daniel: <starts pouring tea for everyone>

Daniel: <nods in acknowledgement of the compliment and starts pouring for Riona>
Queen Azure: And it is precisely because the Silvers want you dead, that I have decided you need a Complement.  I have chosen Daniel for that task.
Daniel: <his grip slips and he knocks the teacup nearly off the saucer and spills tea>
[18:27] arynwyn: Riona: <she's taken a little off-guard by Daniel's reaction> I'm not sure that's necessary, ma'am... <clears her throat> Do you know why the Silvers want me dead?
[18:30] Socks: Queen Azure: Oh, it's quite necessary.  As for the why of it...besides your being a Blue?  <she sighs> You're a halfblood.  As far as I know, you are the only Blue halfblood to exist.  But the Silvers....they have many halfbloods.  Which, sadly, is why a test was necessary.  Daniel and his family, excellent mages though they may be, can tell that you are half-dragon - they might not be able to differentiate between a Blue and a Silver halfblood though.  So I had to check, to be sure that you weren't being planted here by those snakes. <sips her tea>  There are a number of advantages to being a halfblood, not the least of which is great power packed into a human-sized body.
Daniel: <is mopping up his mess with the napkins>
[18:33] arynwyn: Riona: So, what exactly can I do? <glancing at Daniel nervously> The only thing I've noticed is that I don't get burned. At least, by regular fire.
[18:40] Socks: Queen Azure: Well, of course not.  Though, as I expect Daniel's told you, dragonfire is quite another matter.  <sip> You see, all mages have reservoirs they can draw on to power their magic.  It varies from person to person.  Dragons have a nearly unlimited reservoir, in our natural form.  A halfblood's reservoir is easily twice or maybe thrice as large as even the most powerful human mage's.  And you can, of course, summon dragonfire - a gift particular to dragons and those who serve them.  <sips> So what exactly can you do?  Anything you like, near enough.  With training.  Which I expect will be part of Daniel's job.
Daniel: Why me, m'lady? <he asks.  When she arches an eyebrow at him, he hastens to add> Not that I am not honored that you would consider me as a Complement for anyone, but...
Queen Azure: Honestly, I'd been considering you as a Complement for Indigo, but with all of this that has gone on?  No, no.  You found her, you protected her, you are building a rapport.  And you are an excellent mage, from a loyal bloodsworn family.  I can trust you, and I do.  So I would have you sworn to her this afternoon, at the latest.  Pass me a scone, dear.
Daniel: <blinks and hands a scone over to her> Yes, m'lady.  <he looks stunned, like someone just dropped a bag of gold on his lap.  Whether it's "My god, look at all this gold!" or "My god, that bag of gold landed right on my nuts!" is a bit harder to tell>
[18:43] arynwyn: Riona: <quietly, to Daniel> If you would rather not, I understand. I'm sure there are others able to do the job. <not looking at him, she takes a sip of tea>
[18:45] Socks: Daniel: No, no, I didn't say that...
Queen Azure: Then it's settled.  <munching scone> You two will be good for one another, I'm sure.  <she leans towards Riona> I might've picked someone less serious for you if I had time to truly consider things.  See if you can get him to lighten up while you have him, hm?

[18:47] arynwyn: Riona: <she blushes at this "while you have him" thing and nods> What sort of restictions will I have? 
[18:51] Socks: Queen Azure: Restrictions?  <she ponders this over some more bites of scone> Well, clearly, you shouldn't leave the house without Daniel.  And I would ask that you not leave the city without sending word to me first.  But beyond that, I really don't see the need for any restrictions.  I should hope you'd attend to your magic studies; at the very least, learn how to summon and control your dragonfire.  I'll stop by now and again, see how you're doing.  <she smiles> Though, please, I'd rather you not get involved in the feud any more directly than you already have been.  You're the last link I have to Cobalt, and if anything were to happen to you...<she looks suddenly very sad, and much older.  But she shakes it off quickly> Well, Daniel will look after you.  
Daniel: Of course, m'lady.

Maddy: <beams and turns around to better hug Azure back> You still owe me a ride. <pouts>
Queen Azure: I do, at that, don't I?  Some other time, dearest.  <kisses the top of Maddy's head> I do wish you'd study though; you would've made such a nice Complement for Turq.  He's serious too, like your brother here.

Daniel: <sighs and takes the chair she just vacated - the one near Riona> What's confusing?  That one day you're an orphan and the next you're a halfblood dragon who's about to have a personal mage for a bodyguard and tutor? <he asks as if this were a perfectly normal sentence>
[19:14] arynwyn: Riona: <she laughs weakly> That's the jist of it, yes. <she rubs her eyes> Amongst other things.

[19:17] arynwyn: Riona: Being treated like... like I'm someone, not just a lost orphan. Being here. <looking around the room at all the expensive stuff> Not have to work. <she sighs> It's just very different from how I've lived my entire life.
[19:18] Socks: Daniel: <he thinks a moment> Is there something I can do to help you acclimate?  Let you wash the floors now and then or something?  <Okay, that had to be a joke, but his face hasn't changed...unless...yes, yes, there is humor in his eyes! My god! It can happen!>
[19:20] arynwyn: Riona: <she stands up to pace, twisting her hands together> I just need something to do...  To keep myself busy. I don't know how Maddy stays here all day and doesn't go insane.

You have a tailor appointment tomorrow, and we'll probably want to start you in on societal tutoring as well.  Maddy has either done all these things already or attempted them and been unable to sit still through them.
[19:22] arynwyn: Riona: That's another thing! How am I just supposed to sit by and let your father pay all my expenses? Not just expenses, but luxuries!...

[22:34] Socks: <Mrs. Vane dresses and prepares Riona for the ceremony, going over the ceremonial responses used. The basement practically hums with magic, as if it radiates from the walls.  The basement is HUGE too, bigger than the house, and there are doors aside from the one at the top of the stairs.  It's also mostly empty, except, now, for Mr. Vane and Daniel, who's holding an ornate staff.  Mr. Vane smiles at her and gestures to a spot in front of him for her to stand>
[22:35] arynwyn: Riona: <starts toward the men, nervous as usual, and as she approaches, she elegantly trips over her dress>
[22:36] Socks: Daniel: <swoops in to catch her> Steady there.  <helping her right herself>
[22:37] arynwyn: Riona: <blushing furiously> S-sorry. 'm nervous. <mumbling. She straightens out her dress and tries to look like she's not terrified that she's going to be a virginal sacrifice or something>

Daniel: <he locks eyes with her and says> I will.
Mr. Vane: Daniel Vane heeds your call to service, Riona Danvers.  Will you accept him as your Complement?

Mr. Vane: Tradition dictates a set response, but sometimes, the dragon or the Complement alters their line to swear something else instead.  So, no, you didn't say it wrong.  There really isn't a "right".
[22:55] arynwyn: Riona: <frowns and rubs her forehead, looking irritated with herself> Sorry.
[22:56] Socks: Daniel: <he sighs> You don't have to be sorry.  Riona <at least he's stopped calling her "Miss Danvers"> you didn't do anything wrong.  You keep apologizing for...for being YOU.  And you don't ever have to do that here.
[22:57] arynwyn: Riona: <she opens her mouth to retort, but comes up empty, so closes her mouth again. She looks sort of flummoxed by his response>
[22:58] Socks: Daniel: So, my question stands: what would you like to do until dinner?
[22:58] arynwyn: Riona: Oh. Um. <she glances around the basement as if she could point to something and say "let's do that!"> You could show me some magic...?

Mr. Vane: I will set up a couple of them while you go over the background. <sets about doing that>
Daniel: So.  Magic is channeled energy.  That's all it is.  Close your eyes - and no peeking.
[23:00] arynwyn: Riona: <she clasps her hands in front of her and closes her eyes>
[23:01] Socks: Daniel: <places his hand over her heart> Feel your heart.  Not with your hand or your senses - feel it and feel the energy that ripples through the blood it's pumping.  By nature of your birth, you are a being coursing with magic.  
[23:02] arynwyn: Riona: <her brow furrows in concentration for a few moments, then she sways a little on the spot> Okay... that feels weird...
[23:04] Socks: Daniel: <uses his other hand to steady her> Don't try to do anything with it yet.  Just...feel it.  Say hello to it.  You'll get to know it over time.  It's like building a friendship, or courting a lover.  You get to know one other, get to know what each other likes and dislikes, what it feels like in and on and around your body.  You'll become used to the magic, and the more intimate you are with it, the better and stronger a mage you will become.
[23:06] arynwyn: Riona: <her skin is hot to the touch> You sound like a poet. <she smiles faintly, eyes still closed>
[23:08] Socks: Daniel: Excellent tutors. <he pulls his hand away from her heart but he leaves his other hand on her back to make sure she doesn't fall over> Whenever you have free time, find somewhere quiet, close your eyes, and try to find your magic again.  Spend some time cultivating it and it will blossom.  
[23:09] arynwyn: Riona: Such a strange feeling... <she opens her eyes and blinks at him>
[23:10] Socks: Daniel: Well, you just met.  
Mr. Vane: Don't burn down our house, Daniel. <he says as he walks past them.  He pats Daniel on the shoulder and nods to Riona as he heads upstairs.  There are two targets at each end of the basement now (they're standing roughly in the center)>
Daniel: Now, do you want to see a little bit of what you'll be able to do eventually?

[23:11] Socks: Daniel: <walks away from her a little bit> Stand behind me, please, but not too close.
[23:12] arynwyn: Riona: <she backs up and stands behind him, off to one side so she can see> What are you going to do?

[23:14] Socks: Daniel: <instead of answering, he holds his hand out towards one of the targets.  With hardly a twitch or a word, golden red fire shoots out of his palm and completely DESTROYS the target, then suddenly ceases to be.  The air between Daniel and the target is still oven hot, and he steps away from it a little> That. <he replies> Is dragonfire.
[23:15] arynwyn: Riona: Whoosh. <looking impressed>
[23:16] Socks: Daniel: Yours will be at least twice as hot, twice as destructive - and this is something you should know. <turning to her> Fire - normal, regular fire - can be constructive or destructive.  It can cook our food, heat our homes, or it can burn those homes down and kill us.  Dragonfire has no constructive purpose to it.  It destroys.  Period.  It is what dragons use to kill one another, because finding other ways to kill a dragon is difficult.
[23:17] arynwyn: Riona: <she nods> Does that mean I'm especially hard to kill? Being half-dragon?
[23:18] Socks: Daniel: <nods> Absolutely.  If you trust me...?
[23:18] arynwyn: Riona: <smiles faintly and nods> 
[23:19] Socks: Daniel: <raises his palm to her and then hesitates> Ah, forgive me, I forgot to mention this. <lowering the palm> I need your explicit permission to cast magic on you.  This is not a matter of courtesy: it is a requirement.  Just as vampires cannot enter a home without invitation, a dragon cannot be the target of magic -aside from dragonfire- without their own permission.  I am fairly certain it extends to halfbloods as well.
[23:20] arynwyn: Riona: Oh. Um. <looks slightly puzzled> You may cast magic at me. ...? <arching a brow questioningly>
[23:22] Socks: Daniel: That'll do.  <raises his hand again and there's... a lot of little whizzing sounds.  It feels like a breeze going past her...until her dress starts to fall off of her>  ...oops.  I didn't consider that. <going red in the face and turning around.  Her dress is shredded in places, and if Mrs. Vane hadn't pulled her hair up ((we'll just say <cough>)) it would've given her a very interesting hair cut into the bargain>
[23:24] arynwyn: Riona: <she clutches at the shreds of fabrics, turning scarlet> ... ... ...um. <she tries to back up and away from him but trips on the dress (again) though this time it's 'cause it's falling off of her. She lands on her back, sprawled out, half naked, and having hit her head on the hard dirt floor>
[23:25] Socks: Daniel: <hearing her hit the floor, he turns back to her> ...Are you hurt?  <Well, his SPELL certainly didn't hurt her.  He unbuckles his belt and pulls his tunic off, offering it to her>
[23:26] arynwyn: Riona: <she's dazed for a moment, then takes the tunic and covers her chest, scarlet, of course> No, no, I'm fine. Was that supposed to happen? <eying him suspiciously>
[23:28] Socks: Daniel: Ah. Well, I wanted to show you that the spell wouldn't hurt you.  It's...essentially generated razors flipping through the air, though that's an oversimplification...<clears his throat> I failed to consider that while it wouldn't hurt you, the dress might not fare so well.  <he's still red in the face> Please forgive my lack of consideration.
[23:29] arynwyn: Riona: <she fights a smile, fails, then ends up laughing... hard> Oh, don't tell Maddy. She'll INSIST we have to get married now. <giggling, her eyes sparkling with tears of mirth>
[23:30] Socks: Daniel: <his eyes light up, but otherwise his expression doesn't change> You may rest assured that telling my sister about this was the last thing I had in mind.
[23:32] arynwyn: Riona: I don't see how you're going to avoid it, considering I need a new dress. I can't exactly go up like this, so you'll have to fetch me one. And you know she's waiting just at the top of the stairs to pounce on us when we come up. <grinning>
[23:36] Socks: Daniel: <ponders this> Easy enough, if you'll wait here?  <he stands and bows to her...and disappears>
[23:37] arynwyn: Riona: <giggles for a few more seconds, then manages to calm herself and try to look semi-dignified for his return>
[23:38] Socks: Daniel: <it takes him a few minutes but he finally materializes again with one of her very own dresses> Here you go.  I'll be over there. <he points to the far end of the basement and turns to head in that direction>

[14:46] Socks: Mr. Vane: Of course, Miss Danvers.  <standing and offering her a comfy chair> How can I help you?
[14:48] arynwyn: Riona: <she sits and folds her hands in her lap> I was wondering if there were some way for me to earn a little gold from you. I wanted to visit Mrs. Parish - she and Mr. Parish have four children - and offer my condolences, but I wanted to go with a gift. I feel like it's my fault he died. <looking down at her hands> I can cook and clean and sew... That's what I did at the orphanage.
[14:50] Socks: Mr. Vane: <he blinks at this request and leans back to ponder> You know, none of my children have ever asked me for jobs.  The Blue flight takes care of us, and very well, I might add.  I can just give you gold, if you'd like....?
[14:51] arynwyn: Riona: I'd... I'd rather earn it, sir. But thank you. It just wouldn't feel right, knowing that it wasn't my money I was giving Mrs. Parish. And after all Mr. Parish did for me and the orphanage... It just wouldn't be right.
[14:52] Socks: Mr. Vane: Well, I can come up with something, but...what are you going to tell Mrs. Parish?
[14:53] arynwyn: Riona: Only that I was there. She's probably heard all the bizarre details already, and peoples' theories. She doesn't need to know any more than that. It's probably best if she doesn't know more than that. <frowns a moment> Is it safe for me to visit her? Would I be putting her and her children in danger?
[14:55] Socks: Mr. Vane: Possibly.  <he thinks> The Silvers would want to know why you were visiting her.  But they'd probably research her and find out she's not a threat.  So it's ...likely safe.  As for a job, well...how good is your sewing?
[14:56] arynwyn: Riona: I've embroideried church altar cloths...? <which is sort of impressive for an orphan>
[15:00] Socks: Mr. Vane: When the tailor comes this afternoon, we could discuss an apprenticeship?  <he smiles> You could design and make your own clothing, and I'm sure Maddy and Charlotte would be interested in seeing what you can do as well.  Apprenticeships are normally unpaid, but I would be willing to set aside....<ponders> say 10 gold a week for you so long as Mr. Rendham ((the tailor)) says you're doing well?  Then, when your apprenticeship is done, you can make your own money independently.  
[15:01] arynwyn: Riona: <her eyes go wide and she beams> That would be fantastic! Thank you so much! <she gets up and hugs him like a child at Christmas>
[15:02] Socks: Mr. Vane: <hugs her back, surprised> You're welcome.  Rub some of that work ethic off on my children, will you?  If we could find a way to settle Maddy down and get her to apply herself to something besides the piano, I'd be overjoyed.
[15:03] arynwyn: Riona: <still beaming> We'll come up with something. Thank you! Thank you so much! I'm going to go tell Maddy. <she dashes from the room and goes in search of Maddy (which we don't have to RP unless you wanna)>

[13:16] Socks: Daniel: <they're down in the basement again, as it's shielded specifically for magic practice.  He's on a ladder tying mattresses and cushions to the ceiling beams>
[13:17] arynwyn: Riona: So, what are the mattresses and cushions for...? <arching a brow as she watches him work>

[13:19] Socks: Daniel: Because today we're working on levitation, and while it's easy enough to manage, it's hard to control.  <finishes tying up the last one and starts descending the ladder.  Working like that shows off his lean arms>  I don't want you to hurt yourself if you go up too quickly. <putting away the ladder>

[13:20] arynwyn: Riona: <smiles> That's very kind of you.
[13:21] Socks: Daniel: I speak from experience. <clears his throat> Close your eyes and find your magic again.  Have you been doing the exercises I told you to do? <He's recommended what is essentially meditation, at least twice a day>
[13:22] arynwyn: Riona: Yes. <she nods, then closes her eyes. She can feel the magic almost immediately now> 
[13:25] Socks: Daniel: <smiles faintly while her eyes are closed, then straightens his expression back into its usual mild disinterest> Good.  Now feel your feet.  Feel the ground, solid and impenetrable beneath them.  Feel how level your feet are...and then imagine that you're standing on a book made of air.  You don't need to step onto it - it's just there, between your feet and the floor.  Your feet should still feel level and you should still feel as if you're standing on a solid substance - you just won't feel the ground anymore.
[13:28] arynwyn: Riona: <she frowns in concentration, not noticing herself float up a few inches> If I'm standing on something that feels solid how do I know I'm not standing on the ground?

[13:30] Socks: Daniel: Because it doesn't feel like the ground.  <he's smiling again; he walks around behind her, just in case> Imagine another book stacked on top of the first, but still beneath your feet.
[13:31] arynwyn: Riona: <still frowning, she does as instructed, and rises another few inches> What's it supposed to feel like? Surely not a book. <chuckling a little>
[13:33] Socks: Daniel: <continues his circle, and kneels down in front of her, just a little to her right side.  He makes sure he's not smiling> What does it feel like?
[13:34] arynwyn: Riona: Hm? <she opens her eyes to peer at him in confusion, then goes wide-eyed> HOLY -- <she loses her concentration abruptly and falls to the ground, stumbling a bit>
[13:36] Socks: Daniel: <stands up to catch/steady her and damnit, he can't help smiling a little.  It's that or laugh, after all> You didn't shoot straight up at least.
[13:37] arynwyn: Riona: Well, your instructions were really good, apparently. <she smiles at him, then blushes a little, pulling away> Let me try again. <she closes her eyes to get her concentration back>
[13:39] Socks: Daniel: <straightens his smile back out again and clears his throat> You shouldn't be surprised at your success.  Magic isn't just in your blood - in effect, it is your blood.  
[13:42] arynwyn: Riona: ...okay. <she nods, trying to accept this foreign concept. She's quiet a moment, then rises a few inches into the air again> Am I doing it?
[13:43] Socks: Daniel: You are.  Try to maintain it with your eyes open.
[13:46] arynwyn: Riona: <hesitates a moment, then opens her eyes. She wobble a little but stays in the air>

[13:50] Socks: Daniel: <he kneels again and swishes his hand under her feet> See?  You're good at this.
[13:51] arynwyn: Riona: <her bow furrows for a moment and then she rises several inches more> It's easier than I expected.
[13:54] Socks: Daniel: <nods> It isn't a difficult trick, on its own.  Now try walking at that level.
[13:55] arynwyn: Riona: <takes a step forward, then smiles> Amazing. <she takes a few more steps, then turns around to face him, grinning>
[13:58] Socks: Daniel: Very good.  This is an excellent way to get around obstacles - simply go OVER them.  Keep in mind though that being higher up means more people can see you - possibly including the Silvers or their bloodsworn.
[14:02] arynwyn: Riona: <she walks back over to him, looking confortable with being in the air> Isn't there something to make me invisible? <she lowers back down to the ground slowly>
[14:03] Socks: Daniel: <nods> There is.  But while they may not be able to see you, they'll still be able to feel the coalescent magic within you.  It can be a help, but I wouldn't rely on it too heavily unless you're only trying to escape from normal humans or lesser mages.
[14:06] arynwyn: Riona: <she frowns, then shrugs> What else? <looking excited at the prospect of learning new spells>

[15:01] arynwyn: Riona: <grins> And then we could blame you for teaching it to me.
[15:02] Socks: Daniel: Just what I need. <he responds dryly> We ought to be working on your dragonfire.
[15:02] arynwyn: Riona: <grins> Can I blame you if I burn the house down?
[15:03] Socks: Daniel: You won't.  <he's already got the targets set up> The lady herself shielded this basement.
[15:04] arynwyn: Riona: Oh good. <she rubs her hands together> What do I do?
[15:06] Socks: Daniel: Hold your hand out towards the target.  <he demonstrates, palm facing the target> Close your eyes if it helps and focus on your magic.  Feel the....the heat of it within you.  Picture yourself as a vessel full of fire and the palm of your hand is the only way it can be released. <he moves to stand behind her, just in case>
[15:10] arynwyn: Riona: <she holds her hand out toward the target and closes her eyes. She stands there a moment, concentrating, and then suddenly a jet of whitehot fire blasts out of her hand and turns the target to ash. The stregth of the fire knocks her backward and onto her ass>
[15:11] Socks: Daniel: <hurries over, kneeling next to her> Are you okay?
[15:12] arynwyn: Riona: <wincing, she nods> Yeah. I didn't expect it to be so strong...
[15:13] Socks: ((Daniel: Oh you hurt yourself?  I can rub it and make it better...
Me: NO NO NO I'm not writing that.
REAL Daniel: O_O good, 'cause I didn't say that.))
[15:13] arynwyn: (( <giggle> ))
[15:13] Socks: Daniel: It has a kick.  Forgive me, I should've warned you.
[15:14] arynwyn: Riona: That's alright. At least I hit the target. <she climbs back to her feet> Was that dragonfire?
[15:15] Socks: Daniel: <nods> See for yourself. <he nods towards the pile of ash that used to be the target> No earthly fire burns so hot so quickly.
[15:16] arynwyn: Riona: <shakes her head, looking amazed> Why can you do it, when you're not a dragon? Or part dragon?
[15:18] Socks: Daniel: Because I am bloodsworn of the Blue flight.  It is a gift they can -and do- give us when we have proven our loyalty and our worth.
[15:18] Socks: Daniel: But ours is nowhere near as impressive as a dragon's is.
[15:19] arynwyn: Riona: <she nods and turns her attention to the other target> Let me try again. Hopefully I'll stay on my feet this time... <she keeps her eyes open, brow furrowing, and torches the second target, managing to stay on her feet though she does have to take a step back as she blasts it>
[15:22] Socks: Daniel: <nods> Much better.  Practice with it.  You should be able to control it - not just its kick, but its power, its breadth.  You should be able to...well, do this, essentially. <and he holds out his hand.  He concentrates and a little ball of fire appears, hovering, just above his palm.  He holds the hand away from himself and her and stops concentrating; the ball fwooshes out of existence again, leaving the air there hot and muggy>
[15:29] arynwyn: Riona: <considers this a moment, then holds her own hand out, palm-up, and frowns. There's a big fwoosh an a large fireball appears, startling her. Luckily it burns out before it gets to the mattresses and cushions>
[15:30] Socks: Daniel: It's a pleasure to teach such a quick pupil.  Practice for an hour - either the levitation or the dragonfire.  I'll be upstairs.
[15:31] arynwyn: Riona: <tries not to show her disappointment as she nods> Alright.
[15:32] Socks: Daniel: Oh. <he stops at the stairs and turns to face her> Mother asked me: when's your birthday?
[15:34] arynwyn: Riona: Oh. Well, I don't know. Sometime in December is all Madame Hart could tell me, so we lumped it in with Christmas. <shrugs> It was cheaper that way.
[15:38] Socks: Daniel: <nods> I'll let her know.  Thank you, Riona.
[15:39] arynwyn: Riona: Thank you, Daniel. <smile>

[15:40] Socks: Daniel: A teacher is only as good as his pupil.
[15:40] arynwyn: Riona: <smiles and blushes a little>


[13:06] Socks: <A couple of weeks go by.  Daniel is a hard teacher, but she's a quick pupil, so there's really little for him to scold her for or get on her case about.  He's still careful about smiling around her though.  Is it her imagination or does he find excuses to touch her during practice?: a hand on her arm or on her back to "steady" her, for example.  It's probably all in her mind.
Mr. Rendholm, the tailor, is pleased with her apprenticework.  He started her on darning and mending but he's begun giving her simple projects to work on.  He has nothing but good reports for Mr. Vane on her progress.  
Having enough money from her apprenticeship, and with Mr. Vane's permission, Daniel is escorting Riona through the market so she can buy something for Mrs. Parish en route to her (Mrs. Parish's) home>
Daniel: <he's wearing his usual outfit, and his black leather hooded cloak.  He keeps it down today, despite the light drizzle, because it cuts down on his peripheral vision.  He stays close to Riona's side>
[13:09] arynwyn: Riona: <She's picked out a basket of food and is now browsing some sugared candies for the children. She's extremely happy to be out of the house, despite the rain. She's wearing a simple dress (like the one Ben gave Myra) and a warm cloak over that, hood down, hair braided back. She doesn't seem overly concerned about the Silvers finding her, figuring that her new clothes are a pretty good disguise>
[13:13] Socks: <A sudden tingle starts up along her skin, like a breeze, and Daniel's head whips in that direction in time to see a large fireball - of dragonfire, no less - consume a few stalls to their left.  There is a wave of magic that blasts over them - it doesn't hurt but it's strong>
Daniel: <he looks to her quickly, and sees she's unhurt> Riona, stay here for just a moment.  DON'T move.  Please.
[13:15] arynwyn: Riona: <she opens her mouth to argue, then scowls and nods> But if you end up in a fight, I'm fighting with you. <gives him a Don't Bother Arguing look>
[13:17] Socks: Daniel: Fine. <he doesn't bother arguing.  He trots a short distance off into the smoldering ash and wreckage, searching for the saboteur, already raising a shield (a spell he would've taught her by now as well)>
A dragon war is a terrible thing. <a smoothly masculine voice, dipped in sympathy and shock, says behind her>
[13:18] arynwyn: Riona: <she whirls around and searches for the owner of the voice, already preparing a shield spell just in case> 
[13:21] Socks: <There is a young man, about her age, standing there.  He has long, pale blonde hair, and strikingly blue eyes.  He's fair-skinned, in a white shirt and black breeches and boots.  He is gorgeous, prettier rather than handsome.  He holds his hands up> I mean you no harm, Miss.  <There is magic in him, and strongly so - stronger by FAR than in Daniel.  He smiles uneasily> I just couldn't help but be drawn to another like myself.
[13:22] arynwyn: Riona: <she shifts uncomfortably, eying him> Are you a Silver?
[13:23] Socks: <he bows> Half of me is, anyway.  My name is Cary Nowles. <his smile is a little less uneasy, a little more comfortable, now that she doesn't seem likely to blow him to bits>
[13:25] arynwyn: Riona: <takes a half a step back, wishing Daniel would return> Why are you not trying to kill me?... <flatly, as if she doesn't believe he won't yet try>
[13:28] Socks: Cary: <he blinks> Why would I?  <he shakes his head sadly> You have only heard one side of a story, and from whom?  Dragons.  They're destructive.  Look at that. <he gestures to where the stalls used to be>  The dragons just want to obliterate each other, and anyone who gets in the way is just out of luck.  Collateral damage.  
[13:29] arynwyn: Riona: <she glances back> You didn't do that? Then who...? <frowning and searching for Daniel, now, afraid that he's in trouble or hurt>
[13:30] Socks: <Daniel seems to have disappeared down an alley or something>
Cary: Do THAT? NO! <sounds horrified> Why would I incinerate innocent people?  The Blues have sold you a bill of goods.
[13:33] arynwyn: Riona: <she frowns> That's quite a story, considering they saved my life before I even knew it was in danger. Saved me from the Silvers. So if you didn't do that, who did?
[13:35] Socks: Cary: Probably one of the Silvers themselves.  <he shrugs>  And they "saved your life before you knew it was in danger"?  Please.  They took your old life away from you.  Sure, they might have fancy clothes and food to lure you into compliance, but they took away your choice.  Did they ever ASK you if you wanted to stay with them, or just TELL you that this was your home now?
[13:36] arynwyn: Riona: I spent my life as an orphan, never belonging anywhere, always hoping for a family. Now I have that. <crossing her arms and looking indignant> If I wanted to leave, they wouldn't stop me, but I don't want to.
[13:38] Socks: Cary: Just think about this: everything you know about what's going on here, you've heard from only one side.  <he offers her a slip of paper> This is my address; if you ever want to know what's really going on, come here - without your Blue bodyguard.  <he looks back the way Daniel ran> As soon as a Blue hears "Silver" they just go nuts; it isn't safe for me to stay much longer, but I...<blushes lightly>...I felt you nearby, and then there was that fireball, and... <he sighs> I haven't met another halfblood before.  Just please, take it. <insisting the slip of paper closer to her>
[13:39] arynwyn: Riona: <she takes the slip of paper and looks down at it> But there are supposed to be a lot of Silver half-bloods... <looking up at him, puzzled>
[13:41] Socks: Cary: <he shakes his head> Maybe there are.  But I don't know them.  I've met a few of the Silvers and I didn't like them, so I took off.  They probably don't care much for ME either.  Look, I have to go, before your friend decides I need incinerating.  <he swoops in to kiss her cheek quickly, then dashes off>
[13:42] arynwyn: Riona: <she blushes at the kiss and puts a hand where his lips touched her> ...bye. <quietly, and confusedly. She looks down at the slip of paper again, then tucks it into the bodice of her dress>
[13:43] Socks: Daniel: <trots back, cursing> Bastard got away.  ...excuse my language.  <he clears his throat> I traced him for a bit then lost his trail.  We're getting you back to the compound, NOW.  You can have the post send your gifts to Mrs. Parish.
[13:44] arynwyn: Riona: <scowling> No. Nothing happened. I want to go see Mrs. Parish, I owe her that much. It's been over two weeks anyway. <hefting her basket and turning in the direction of the Parish home> I'm not going to live my life in fear.
[13:45] Socks: Daniel: <mouth gapes a moment, then he hurries to catch up with her> They just incinerated a couple of stalls you happened to be vaguely NEAR.  What if they incinerate the entire Parish house?!
[13:46] arynwyn: Riona: We won't let that happen. We can sense when they're near. I'll keep it short, Daniel. But please, this means a lot to me. 
[13:47] Socks: Daniel: <sighs> You're infuriatingly stubborn about your good deeds. <he doesn't sound angry, just...worried.  But he's no longer attempting to dissuade her>
[13:48] arynwyn: Riona: <she slips an arm through his and tugs him along> Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. <smiles and nudges him, trying to coax a smile out of him>
[13:51] Socks: Daniel: <glances at her arm briefly before his eyes flit to hers.  He suddenly resumes looking everywhere but at her> We should keep an eye out.  Just in case. It isn't like the Silvers to just flub a shot like that, unless they have an ulterior motive.
[13:53] arynwyn: Riona: <she pats his hand> You worry too much. <she turns down a street> It's not too much further. We'll be back home in no time. 
[13:54] Socks: Daniel: Maybe this is for the best.  Maybe there was some reason they wanted to scare us back home... <still pondering>
[13:55] arynwyn: Riona: Daniel! <half-laughing, half-scathing> You're being paranoid! Maybe a Silver just lost his temper at a vendor! 
[13:58] Socks: Daniel: <does look at her now> It's my job to be paranoid, where you're concerned.  <his voice takes on a slightly softer tone> I have to make sure you're safe.  <he clears his throat - possibly blushing? that might've been a blush! - and turns his head away again> 
[13:59] arynwyn: Riona: <she leans up and kisses his cheek> I know. And you do it very well. But you're going to put yourself into an early grave with all this worrying, and then where would I be? 
[14:01] Socks: Daniel: <swallows a little hard, still not looking at her> You might outlive me anyway.  I...I don't know about halfblood life spans but the lady is several centuries old.
[14:01] arynwyn: Riona: <she blinks, her smile fading> What?
[14:03] Socks: Daniel: <in better control of himself, he looks at her and nods> It's entirely possible that your lifespan may be two or three times that of a normal human.  I don't know, of course; you're the first halfblood I've ever known of, let alone met.
[14:04] arynwyn: Riona: <her brow furrows and she turns and starts walking again, unsure how to feel about this news>
[14:05] Socks: Daniel: You could always talk to her about it?  Maybe she knows.
[14:06] arynwyn: Riona: <she nods and stops in front of a small house, just a shade above a hovel> Here, this is the Parish's. Are you coming inside?
[14:07] Socks: Daniel: <he nods> Absolutely.  I have no intention of leaving your side - especially not after what happened at the market.
[14:07] arynwyn: (( Do we wanna FF or do you have something else? I don't really want to have to come up with Mrs. Parish and 4 kids. Lol ))
[14:08] Socks: ((Yeah we can ff. but I need bio))

Riona: <It takes her about a week to decide that she really does want to go talk to this strange man and to come up with a plan. She waits until everyone is asleep, then dresses and creeps out of the house. She knows the city well and it doesn't take her long to find the address on the slip of paper. She's wearing another simple dress with her cloak, hood up this time>
[14:21] Socks: <the house is small, sort of tucked away, but it has a quiet sort of charm.  It's seen better days, clearly, but it'll stand up to a strong wind.  There're even real glass windows - generally considered a luxury item, though the curtains on the other side are thin and threadbare>
[14:21] arynwyn: Riona: <she hesitaes a moment, taking a reading of the house and surrounding area for magical energy>
[14:22] Socks: <Surrounding area?  Not so much.  But the house quietly radiates it, like a nightlight>
[14:24] arynwyn: Riona: <she takes a deep breath and steps to the door, knocking lightly. Oh, forgot to mention that she left Daniel a note on her pillow explaining that if something happened to her, it was the Silvers, and where to find this half-blood. In case she doesn't make it back by morning for one reason or another>
[14:26] Socks: Cary: <from inside, muffledly> Just a minute!  <he opens the door, still pulling on his shirt.  He's barefoot, in just his breeches - well, and the shirt now - but she still got a flash of nice abs as he pulled it on.  His hair is loose and he smiles widely when he sees her> You came!  I'm so glad!  Please come in, I'll put the kettle on.
[14:27] arynwyn: Riona: <she glances behind her, still a little uncertain, then takes a deep breath and steps inside> I have to return before dawn.
[14:31] Socks: Cary: Of course.  If they found out you were missing, they'd burn down half of the city looking for you, probably. <shutting the door behind her then hurrying to stoke up the hearth and fill the kettle> Please, have a seat.  <it's small, maybe for two people?  There's a double bed on the other side of the hearth, with a chest at the end of it.  On the near side of the hearth is a table with two chairs.  There's a cabinet and a counter and a braided scrap rug on the floor.  Strings of root vegetables and a leg of meat hang from the ceiling, on one side of the cabinet.  The other side has some dried herbs hanging.  There's half a loaf of bread on the counter. It's very homey - sort of feminine really - and warm.>
[14:32] arynwyn: Riona: <she sits and watches him work for a moment> I'm not really sure why I came... 
[14:33] Socks: Cary: I assume because you had questions?  Probably starting with....<as he swings the kettle of water onto the fire>..how to be what you are?
[14:34] arynwyn: Riona: We can start with that. <studying his back>
[14:37] Socks: Cary: <sits in the other chair> Well, don't think of it as being something different.  This is something you've always been.  It doesn't really make you less of a person - and it certainly doesn't make you more of one. <he chuckles> My grandma used to tell me that, when I'd get "uppity".  "You might be part dragon, but I can still whup your behind, boy!" <he says in cranky granny voice>
[14:38] arynwyn: Riona: <smiles faintly> You've always known what you are?
[14:41] Socks: Cary: <he nods> My mother died giving birth to me - I guess human women just can't handle carrying a partial dragon - but my grandmother raised me.  She knew about it, because my mother had told her.  But she didn't tell ME about it until I accidentally incinerated a dog.  <he looks sad> I mean...it bit me, and it was scaring me, but...  <he shakes his head> I guess she'd thought Mom made it up?  Or that if I didn't know about it, I'd just be normal.  But that pile of ash that used to be that dog kinda put the lie to that.
[14:42] arynwyn: Riona: <winces> I'm lucky that didn't happen to me, at the orphanage... <shudders a bit> How terrible.
[14:46] Socks: Cary: Yeah.  It really shook me, but Grandma helped me, and that was one of the things she told me: that I'm still me, and I'm still a basically good person.  I just needed to learn how to control it so that didn't happen again.  It took me awhile though.  To just find out, out of the blue, that you have this immense POWER inside you and to see what it can do.  <he reaches over and pats her hand> But it doesn't change who YOU are.  It just...alters your landscape a little, yeah?
[14:47] arynwyn: Riona: <she nods> So you don't interact with the Silver flight or their mages?
[14:50] Socks: Cary: No.  I came across them once.  They talked with me about why they were fighting the Blues, why I should be with them...but I told them I just want to live a simple life.  They can take their completely understandable grudge match and jump off a pier, as far as I'm concerned.  I mean, they help me out now and then, but they've never asked anything of me.  It's a dragon thing, I guess, looking after their blood.  <he shrugs> They've tried tempting me in more with fancier houses and nicer things but...this is where I grew up. <gesturing to the house> And now that Grandma's gone, well...it's all I have left of family. <he pets a wall with a sad smile>
[14:50] arynwyn: Riona: They told you why they were fighting the Blues? <leaning forward, interested now> What did they say?
[14:53] Socks: Cary: They said that a long time ago, many centuries ago, which isn't that long for a dragon, I guess, a Blue male raped a Silver female before the Blues killed her.  The Silvers demanded justice, but the Blues...well, they're better fighters than the Silvers are.  The Silvers are more intelligent, more thoughtful, less blunt and bullying.  They just want those who are responsible for that poor female's death to pay, but the Blues keep protecting them.  Of course, they're protecting their own royal family, so it's little wonder.

[14:54] arynwyn: Riona: Did they say who the Blue was?
[14:56] Socks: Cary: They didn't name him, but they said Azure, the current queen? helped kill the Silver afterwards.  Presumably it was one of her brothers?  I don't know the details.  I...kinda didn't want to hear more. <looks sick>
[14:57] arynwyn: Riona: <she mirrors his sick look, looking down at her hands, twisting them together. She sighs finally> What else can you tell me?
[14:58] Socks: Cary: Oh, the kettle! <stands and goes to pull it off the fire, then readies two teacups> How do you take yours?
[14:59] arynwyn: Riona: Plain is fine, thank you. <not wanting to show how spoiled she's gotten with her 3 lumps of sugar and cream>
[15:00] Socks: Cary: <nods and retrieves the kettle> As for what else I can tell you, well...I know quite a bit.  Ask, and if I know it, I'll answer.  <pours the water in and stirs the tea a little before bringing the cups and saucers over.  He sets hers in front of her with a soft smile> I couldn't do otherwise for a fellow halfblood - and a very pretty one, too. 
[15:01] arynwyn: Riona: <she blushes a little and takes a sip of the tea> Did you know your father?
[15:05] Socks: Cary: <he shakes his head> The Silvers I talked with said they could probably guess who it was, but it was kind of a scandal.  He wasn't supposed to have...y'know...been with my mom, 'cause he already had a dragon mate?  And she found out and was jealous, so he said he wouldn't see Mom anymore, to make sure his mate didn't go into a jealous rage or something.  They talked like it was sort of an..."open secret", but they didn't want to cause any more trouble.  They did say that, if it was who they thought it was?, he didn't know Mom was pregnant when he left her.  <he shrugs> I mean, sure, I'm a little curious?  But mostly it was nice to know that he cared about her and that dragons can be just as people-like as people.  You know, love, affairs, jealousy, etc.  That's all normal stuff.  There's nothing big and scary and mystic about it.

[16:46] arynwyn: Riona: <comes down in the blue dress, her hair half pulled up, the rest curling around her shoulders. She's borrowed a pretty blue necklace from either Maddy or Mrs. Vane. She carries two packages - one medium-sized and bulky, one small and rectangular. She adds it to the growing stack of presents>
[16:50] Socks: Daniel: <looks over and drops his champagne when he sees her.  A servant who had the tray near him manages to catch it in time, but he doesn't even notice.  He just stares at her, mouth open a little>
Maddy: <sweeps over to her> You look perfect!! <beam>
Queen Azure: Oh, my dear!  What a lovely dress!  <smiling at her, because of course, Maddy was practically stuck to the queen's side>
[16:51] arynwyn: Riona: <her eyes had sought out Daniel first, of course, and she blushes when she sees his reaction. She clears her throat and turns to the two women> Thank you. I only finished it yesterday. <chuckles a little, daring to glance back over at Daniel>

Maddy: You really ought to sell them!  You'd make hundreds, maybe thousands of gold!

Maddy: <pouts> They're not married yet.  <brightens> But Riona's been just like a sister to me anyway! <hugs Riona>

[17:04] Socks: Queen Azure: <she sighs> He's always been very dedicated to being what he is, but I think he's been neglecting his own happiness.  I'd give it to him if I could wrap it up with a bow, but alas.  
Daniel: <turns back towards them and starts to take a couple of steps towards them until a servant rings a bell announcing dinner.  He looks towards the sound of the bell and exhales>
[17:04] arynwyn: Riona: I would too, ma'am, but I'm not very sure what would make him happy. I was at a loss as to what to give him for his birthday... <she links arms with Maddy and turns toward the dining room>
[17:06] Socks: Maddy: A kiss?  Or 17?
Queen Azure: <she laughs as she walks along with them> That would be amusing to see.  I adore Daniel, but I'm not sure he'd know what to do about that.

Riona would be sitting near the lady and Daniel, just to torment him, will be at the other end of the table by his father> 
[17:10] arynwyn: Riona: <takes her seat, not daring to look at Daniel after what Azure just said. She clears her throat and looks down at her plate>
[17:13] Socks: <There's Cornish Game Hens for everyone, along with roasted vegetables and fresh baked bread and fresh churned butter.  Wine and champagne to drink, and a lovely light mousse for dessert>
[17:13] arynwyn: Riona: <om nom nom, talk talk talk, anxious for present-openings>
[17:17] Socks: <PRESENTS TIEM!  Daniel's parents got him a hefty amount of coin; Maddy made him a very lovely bookmark.  The Queen got him a new spellbook.  Daniel is appreciatively embarassed by all these gifts and the attention he garners from everyone watching him unwrap them.  Mrs. Vane sets the presents from Riona in front of him>

[17:23] Socks: Daniel: ... ...<he's clearly impressed with the presents and he looks over at her, nodding with a very small smile.  He swallows hard, blushes and looks back down at them, fingering the cloth of the tunic>
[17:24] arynwyn: Riona: <she fidgets and exhales, realizing that she had been holding her breath. She takes a drink of wine to distract herself>
[17:27] Socks: <After dinner, Maddy plays piano.  Some people dance - a few women come up to ask Daniel, but he shakes his head and turns them down.  He heads outside for a moment to get some cool air>
[17:29] arynwyn: Riona: <she gives him a couple minutes, then follows him out, standing behind him quietly for a moment> Having a good birthday?
[17:30] Socks: Daniel: <he blinks and turns to her> Yes, thank you.  You....<all his politely distant civility just vanishes as he takes her in again and says, sort of helplessly>...you look incredible.

[00:20] Socks: Servant: <she nods> I'll show you to the dining room, miss.  <she closes the chest and picks it up again> This way. <heading for the door> Leave your clothes here; I'll wash 'em for you.
[00:21] arynwyn: Riona: <she glances back at her clothes and then follows the servant out, wishing she knew how to send magical messages to Daniel>
[00:27] Socks: <The servant girl leads her down a long hallway, also richly decorated, sets down the chest and opens a twin set of doors> Miss Danvers, as you requested, sir.  <she curtseys and then backs out of the way, picks up the chest again, and disappears down the hallway.>

<Inside is, of course, practically dripping with silver and onyx and lavish things.  A highly polished ash dining table occupies the center of the room, with room enough for a dozen at least.  At the head of the table, immediately visible as you step in, is a man - older than Cary, but with similar (though not quite the same) pale pale PALE blonde hair.  His eyes are an icy blue, and he is dressed in a tunic of silver velvet over black leather pants and boots.  Black embroidery, intricate and fine, decorates the edges of the tunic, and he wears a silver chain with a HUGE, blood red ruby on it that hangs in the middle of his chest.  His skin is pale and he is gorgeous, yet seems to be made entirely of ice somehow.  His smile, far from being warm, chills the blood.> Come, sit down.  You must be hungry.  Dinner should almost be ready. 
[00:29] arynwyn: Riona: <she folds her hands in front of her and gazes around, trying not to look as impressed as she feels> May I ask why you have bought me here?

[00:45] arynwyn: Riona: <she stares at him a moment, then turns away, disgusted. She still doesn't look at her food or drink, just stares at the wall across from her, fighting tears>
[00:46] Socks: Lord L'Argent: You can submit or we can take the blood from you by force and use it directly on our own offspring.  I confess, that's rather the more tempting option.  It was Cary's idea to use you for breeding instead of having you killed.  You should thank him for it.

Azure won't risk attacking our stronghold, nor will she allow her bloodsworn to attempt such foolishness either.  So no one is coming to get you.  You can have a comfortable life for as long as you provide Cary with offspring.  You should be strong enough to withstand the labor, given your heritage.
[00:50] arynwyn: Riona: <she rubs the tears from her eyes and sighs> Where is he?
[00:51] Socks: Lord L'Argent: Cary?  In his rooms, I suspect.  Eat.  You need your strength.
[00:52] arynwyn: Riona: I want to see him. <turning her eyes on L'Argent> Why isn't he here?
[00:53] Socks: Lord L'Argent: Because he thought you would be angry with him, and we know Blue temper.  He is powerful - Plata's blood is in his veins - but we will take no chances.  Had you acted up, a full dragon might be needed to subdue you.  And I wished to meet the daughter of Cobalt.
[00:54] arynwyn: Riona: If I agree to do this quietly and without burning your house down, will you concede me one favor?
[00:56] Socks: Lord L'Argent: <he laughs> Oh, very much a Blue!  Yes, your blood will be wonderful!  <he smirks at her> What is this favor you think you can extort from me?
[00:58] arynwyn: Riona: Let me write Daniel a letter. Nothing secret, I don't care if you read it. I just... <looking away> want him to think I left on my own. So he doesn't try to find me and get himself killed. Please. <looks back at him, pleadingly>
[00:59] Socks: Lord L'Argent: Daniel?  <he leans back> Oh, the bloodsworn bodyguard.  You chose him over Cary, yes?  <he muses> They're doing a better job of it than we are.
[00:59] arynwyn: Riona: Job of what?... <her face going blank>
[01:00] Socks: Lord L'Argent: Convincing you to breed with their bloodsworn.  That's what we're doing after all.  Perhaps they have finally acknowledged the truth of the world, and the steps we must take for it.  
[01:01] arynwyn: Riona: They didn't convince me to do anything. <shaking her head>

[01:03] Socks: Lord L'Argent: Believe what you wish.  <he stands, his plate empty> It is better if you forget your old life.  It is no longer relevant.  You will stay here until you finish eating; a servant will show you up to Cary's rooms, and you will STAY there until you have delivered a child.
[01:03] arynwyn: Riona: <she stands up as well> And the letter? Please, sir... <hating how she sounds like she's begging>
[01:04] Socks: Lord L'Argent: No.  If he is foolhardy enough to come here, he will die: either at our hands or at the Blues', for disobeying Azure's orders.  That is his decision, and I doubt any letter you write will make a difference in that.  <he heads for a set of doors opposite the ones she entered from>
[01:05] arynwyn: Riona: <she sinks back down into her chair and stares at her plate, not really seeing what's on it>
[01:09] Socks: <The lord of the Silvers leaves her alone.  A servant walks in - another woman, but a different one than the one who brought her clothes - and waits along the wall behind her chair>
[01:10] arynwyn: Riona: <she shovels some food into her mouth hastily, choking down enough to make it look like her plate is mostly clean. She wipes her mouth, stands up, and turns to the servant> 
[01:11] Socks: <The servant nods and leads her out yet another different set of doors into another hallway.  It is only occasionally lit, with periods of deep shadow between torch sconces>
[01:12] arynwyn: Riona: <follows along quietly, thinking only of Daniel and how worried he's going to be when he wakes and finds her gone>
[01:13] Socks: <Suddenly there's a thud and an> OOF! <from the servant.  She crumples to the floor, unconscious, and a huddled figure comes forward, still indistinct in the shadows>
Come with me, child. <a woman's voice says. She sounds middle-aged>
[01:14] arynwyn: Riona: <hurries toward the voice, whispering> Who are you?
[01:17] Socks: My name is Hilda.  I can fill you in while we move.  <she goes towards a sconce and the light illuminates her: though she sounds maybe a decade or two older than Riona, she looks easily twice that age, and uses a cane.  Her hair is WHITE, not the pale blonde of Cary and L'Argent.  She is in a dress that used to be pretty, before age got ahold of it.  It's a simple sheath of heather gray, soft and threadbare now.  She pulls the sconce and the panel of wall slides away> This way.
[01:18] arynwyn: Riona: <glances back at the servant, hoping she's okay, then ducks through the secret door, a million questions buzzing in her mind>
[01:19] Socks: Hilda: Did L'Argent tell you why you're here? <she asks as they move along a corridor quickly...well, as quickly as she can manage>
[01:19] arynwyn: Riona: To breed. As if I'm an animal. That's all he would say though I don't understand why they want Blue blood.
[01:21] Socks: Hilda: Blues are the better fighters.  Stronger, more physical, do more damage.  Silvers are meant to be tacticians.  In a fair, one-on-one fight, a Blue will overwhelm a Silver every time.  They want the Blues' strength to add to what they see as their own superior intelligence.  

[01:22] arynwyn: Riona: Why not kidnap and rape a full-blooded dragon then? I'm hardly worth all this trouble...

[01:23] Socks: Hilda: They can't hold a Blue normally.  They'd have no chance, or else L'Argent would've gone after Azure by now.  The war between them started with their attempt to get into a Blue's pants in the first place, through less violent means.  But that didn't work out so well.
[01:25] arynwyn: Riona: They told me it was because a Blue raped a Silver and then killed her... <she wraps her arms around herself tightly> Who are you? I can trust you, can't I? It seems I'm not a very good judge of character. <sighing>
[01:27] Socks: Hilda: I am a bloodsworn mage of the Silver flight.  <she stops to rest, leaning against the wall> So, by that measure, you've every reason not to trust me.  But you can.  I've been looking for my chance to get out of here for years now; if I get you out, you can deliver me to the Blues, and let them deal with me as they see fit.  I do not fear death; it'd be something of a relief at this point.

[01:28] arynwyn: Riona: <she eyes the woman warily a moment, then nods> Have they treated you that badly?
[01:31] Socks: Hilda: <she looks Riona dead in the eyes> L'Argent raped me daily until I gave him a child.  I suppose "rape" may not be the correct term: I submitted, because I am bloodsworn.  I have to do what the Lord of the flight tells me, so if he tells me to strip down and get on the bed, I strip down and get on the bed.  <she sighs and looks at the floor> I am, so far as I know, the only human woman to have survived giving birth to a halfblood dragon.  And he took my child, my beautiful girl, and promptly forgot I existed.  Which, I admit, was a relief for awhile.  But I had no further use, you see.  I'm not even sure he knows I survived the birth.
[01:33] arynwyn: Riona: <she looks away, appalled> I'm sorry. I can't imagine... <shakes her head> I will make sure you are dealt with fairly. I daresay rescuing me will soften their hearts. Come. <she offers an arm to the woman>
[01:37] Socks: Hilda: Thank you, dear. <she accepts the arm; and since I haven't mentioned it yet, there IS a tingle of magic around her but it is faint...like a dimmed light> As for the Blues having raped a Silver female?  Hardly.  Heather was seducing Azul, the future Lord of the Blue flight.  They hadn't completed the formal mating rituals yet, but that's just words, and he was happy to accomodate her appetites until he uncovered evidence of her duplicity.  She was specifically targeting him as a mate for the offspring, as you may have guessed.  When he found out, he confronted her with it, not wanting to believe his beloved would betray him.  She killed him in the ensuing argument, and was collecting his blood for study when Azure and Cobalt burst into the room, having heard his cries.  Azure is Azul's sister, you see.  They were well within their rights to kill her, and did so.  But the Silvers have painted their own picture of things, so the Gray Council, slow-moving bounders that they are, have done nothing about it. <she rolls her eyes>  Of course, the Blues maintain that they can handle the Silvers on their own, so there is that to consider.
[01:39] arynwyn: Riona: I wish someone would have told me this months ago... <sighing and rubbing her forehead with her free hand> I've been such an imbecile...
[01:42] Socks: Hilda: You saw what they wanted you to see.  They're good at that.  Don't worry about it, dear.  They've been bamboozling the Council for CENTURIES.  Turn left up ahead <as they near an intersection in the hallways>  As for the reason they want you?  Aside from the Blues, they also want to deal with the humans.
[01:43] arynwyn: Riona: Deal with the humans? Meaning? <turning left as instructed>
[01:45] Socks: Hilda: We're getting stronger and we're generally afraid of dragons, which means we kill them when we come across them.  Oh not always, but sometimes a human gets lucky.  The dragons as a whole are arguing about what to do with the humans, and the Silvers are on the side of "Put them in their place."  They want to take over human society through the use of their halfbloo... <suddenly the walls SHUDDER.  A roar that would be ear-piercing were it not muffled by the building rings out> Uh oh.  <she looks at the ceiling> I hope you feel special, dearie.  We need to hurry.
[01:46] arynwyn: Riona: Just tell me which way to go. <she focuses carefully and they both levitate about 6 inches, then zoom forward so Hilda doesn't have to walk> This will be faster...
[01:47] Socks: Hilda: <blinks> You've had good teachers.  Straight ahead, ignore all the turns.  We need to get you outside.  <Another roar - this one different, deeper - echoes.>  Head for the stairs going down.
[01:48] arynwyn: Riona: <she shivers at the roar and zooms them along faster, going straight as indicated> I hope we're fast enough...
[01:49] Socks: Hilda: I do too.  Azure will pull this place down around our ears.
[01:50] arynwyn: Riona: Azure? <glancing behind them just in case> 
[01:53] Socks: Hilda: I have never met the Blue Queen, but I have heard the stories.  She was devoted to Cobalt.  When I heard talk that Cobalt's daughter was here... <she shakes her head> L'Argent believed that she would never openly attack the Silvers; the Blues have played defense for all these centuries, out of fear of the Gray Council's reprimand.  But from what I've heard, she'd take on the Council itself if it meant getting back the offspring of her beloved.
[01:54] arynwyn: Riona: <she stops> Azure is here? We need to help her! <she pulls her arm away and turns back>
[01:54] Socks: Hilda: <laughs> Child, she's attacking the Silver Stronghold.  The only thing we need to do is get out of here before she destroys us with the place!
[01:55] arynwyn: Riona: <she hesitates> Are you sure she'll be alright?...

[01:56] Socks: Hilda: I would be very surprised if she came alone.  <The building shakes again, violently> She'll have her consort and a host of bloodsworn with her, at the very least.  We go down these stairs, they will take us to the kitchens.  From there, we can get out the back.  You'll want your shields up when we go out.  And don't worry about me; most of my magic is gone but I can still manage a decent shield.
[01:57] arynwyn: Riona: <she nods and takes Hilda's arm again, then zooms them down the stairs and into the kitchen> If anyone gets hurt on my account... <mumbling to herself>
[01:58] Socks: Hilda: Hopefully only the Silvers.  ...and hopefully not Irisa.  <she sighs> 
[01:58] arynwyn: Riona: Who's Irisa?
[02:00] Socks: Hilda: My daughter.  I've seen her, now and then, pretending to be a servant.  But she doesn't know I'm alive.  And seeing what L'Argent has raised her to be...<she shakes her head>  I know she is my daughter in blood only.  She is too much like her father, but...she was the child I gave birth to, and I can't just...that bond is still strong, even if I wish it were not. 
[02:01] Socks: ((when Hilda was pretending to be a servant, not Irisa.))
[02:01] arynwyn: Riona: <pats the woman's arm> We'll hope she has sense enough to get away, then.
[02:03] Socks: Hilda: <sighs> Right.  Getting away.  Forgive me my sentimentalities.  This way.  There's a door just through this corridor.  <the roaring outside is growing louder.  Something shakes the building like an earthquake, throwing Hilda off her feet>
[02:04] arynwyn: Riona: <stumbles and tries to catch Hilda, only managing to break her fall. She helps her back to her feet> Are you hurt?
[02:07] Socks: Hilda: No, child.  Hurry.  <she leads her to an anteroom, and then to a door>
<Outside is CHAOS.  The Silver Stronghold is deep in the mountains and the door leads out into the foothills.  A cadre of Blue Dragons - in dragon form, of course - are breathing dragonfire and straight out WRECKING the mountainside, which houses the stronghold.  There's a small complement of mages fighting other mages; the air is CHOKED with magic.  And, of course, the Silver Dragons are retaliating, scales glowing in the dying light.  The Silver Dragons are sleeker and more sinewy than the Blues but they outnumber the Blues 2 to 1>
[02:09] arynwyn: Riona: <stops dead at the sight, in awe, having never seen a dragon in dragon form before. It takes her a moment, but she comes to her senses. Instead of throwing up a shield, as Hilda instructed, she narrows her eyes and sends a blast of dragonfire at the back of the nearest Silver dragon>
[02:10] Socks: Hilda: <has a shield up, of course> What are you doing?!  They'll incinerate you!
[02:11] arynwyn: Riona: <she keeps her focus on the dragon until the dragonfire hits it, then throws up her own shield>
[02:12] Socks: <The Dragon howls in pain and whips its head in her direction>
Hilda: If you want to help, join the mages; we can't take on a dragon!  Even at my strongest...! <she starts towards the mages>
<The Silver inhales in preparation for a blast>
[02:13] arynwyn: Riona: <she dashes after Hilda, dodging the incoming attack. She searches the faces of the mages, praying that Daniel is not among them>

[02:17] Socks: <The dragonfire goes off just behind them.  The mages are thick, and, just as the Blues are outnumbered, the Silver bloodsworn outnumber those wearing Blue livery easily>
Daniel: <of course he's here.  He's holding the enchanted dagger she gave him in one hand and shooting spells with the other, and every mage that comes up against him goes down in a smoking heap, but he's surrounded>
<Another blast of dragonfire goes overhead - just BARELY overhead, no less.  And it came from a Blue Dragon>
[02:18] arynwyn: Riona: <her breath catches as she sees Daniel surrounded. She starts shooting dragonfire balls at the mages surrounding him, careful to aim so she doesn't accidently hit him>
[02:20] Socks: Daniel: <looks in the direction of the blasts> RIONA! <outright STABS someone foolish enough to be standing between them and pushes the bleeding Silver bloodsworn aside to run towards her>
Hilda: <reinforces her shield, just in case>
[02:22] arynwyn: Riona: <tears fill her eyes as she runs over to him, flinging her arms around him> Daniel! I'm so sorry! I'm such an idiot. <starts babbling on about the Silvers and the kidnapping, etc., as she cries into his shoulder>
[02:23] Socks: Daniel: <hugs her tightly> Shh.  Shh.  We'll get you out of here.  <he looks to Hilda and narrows his eyes> And who is this?
Hilda: <bows as best she's able> No one of consequence, anymore.  Certainly not a threat to you.
[02:24] arynwyn: Riona: She helped me escape. Don't hurt her. At least hear her out first. <wipes at her eyes, still slightly hysterical>
[02:25] Socks: Daniel: For your sake, anything.  <he raises a hand and a flare shoots up out of it into the sky>  Are you okay?  Did they hurt you?  <he sounds like an affirmative response from her may flip his Brutal Homocide Switch - which it very well might>
[02:26] arynwyn: Riona: No, help arrived just in time. <smiles at Hilda, still clinging to Daniel as if she's never ever going to let go>
[02:28] Socks: Daniel: Good.  <he sighs in relief and turns to lead her off the battlefield>
<There is a FLASH and the incoming heat of dragonfire is unmistakable>
Hilda: <moves between the dragonfire and Daniel & Riona.  Her shields hold JUST long enough disperse the dragonfire, but it knocks her down with a cry, and what little magic was left in her is at such a low ebb, that she probably won't be able to raise another shield>

[02:29] arynwyn: Riona: <she extends her shield to include Hilda and pulls away from Daniel to help her to her feet, looking in the direction of the dragonfire>
[02:30] Socks: Cary: <is there, hair pulled back>
Daniel: Stay here. <striding towards Cary, holding his dagger in front of him>
[02:31] arynwyn: Riona: Daniel, no! <she all but drops Hilda and starts after him, fear clutching her heart> 
[02:32] Socks: Daniel: <ignores her> You're going to regret that, Silver - right before I disintegrate you.
Cary: You're the infamous Daniel, I take it?  She's talked of you often enough.  You think you're so much better than I am for pursuing her?
Daniel: I'm not here to talk. <charging up a spell>
[02:34] arynwyn: Riona: Daniel, don't. <she puts a hand on his arm> Let's just go. Please. <even knowing the truth about Cary, she can't help but believe that it wasn't really true> Cary, please, don't do this. 

[02:37] Socks: Cary: She is my prize, not yours. <addressing Daniel, clearly>  I gave her the shoulder to cry on that you never seemed to.  I listened to her and comforted her.  <he smirks> In many different ways.
Daniel: <...okay, Daniel is normally a cool, collected young man.  They're practically his defining characteristics.  But the intimation that Cary's just made has him seeing red> You won't lay a FINGER on her again, bastard. <fires off a blast of dragonfire>
Cary: <it bounces off his shield harmlessly> We'll see about that, won't we?
[02:40] arynwyn: Riona: <tugging Daniel's arm again> Don't listen to him, Daniel. He never touched me. <starting to get desperate and slightly hysterical again> Cary, don't do this. This isn't you! You've been corrupted by that L'Argent fellow! No one needs to die! 
[02:42] Socks: Cary: <he chuckles sardonically> She's so determined to see the best in people, isn't she?  It is sort of charming in a naive way.
Daniel: <tries another blast of dragonfire, but it ALSO bounces off>
[02:43] arynwyn: Riona: <her expressions hardens> You were really going to keep me prisoner and rape me daily? <taking a step toward him>
[02:47] Socks: Cary: That's such a harsh way to put it.  I'll give you the best of everything.  Wines, all the best food, gorgeous clothes, sumptuous bedding.  And I will have you moaning my name every spare moment I have. It's going to be glorious, Ree....<turns back to Daniel> once we've cleared the riff-raff out of the way.
Daniel: <is a seething ball of rage, and is charging up a spell of intense power - more power than she's probably ever felt him pull in before - but she can tell it's not going to be powerful enough to dent Cary's shield>
[02:49] arynwyn:     Riona: <her expression turns to disgust> Then you deserve to die. <she raises her own hand and casts a spell she doesn't even know existed - stripping Cary of his shield (you can decide if she's successful or not). As she does, she yells> NOW! <to Daniel, of course>
[02:50] Socks: Cary: <blinks at the disappearance of his shield> What...?
Daniel: <his blast goes off, and Cary doesn't even have a chance to scream before he is reduced to ash>
Hilda: <from WELL behind them, she blinks>
[02:51] arynwyn: Riona: <she shudders at the sight and turns away, looking sick and sad> Are you hurt, Daniel? <trying to keep her voice steady>
[02:52] Socks: Daniel: No.  Are you?  <he presses a hand to her cheek>
[02:52] arynwyn: Riona: <shakes her head, pressing a hand over his> No. <she glances around to see how the rest of the battle is going> Should we...?
[02:53] Socks: Daniel: We need to get you out of here.  You're why we're here.  <he looks over at Hilda> You'll come with us, of course.  I wouldn't leave you here to whatever the Silvers would do to a traitor.
Hilda: Thank you.  It...would not be pleasant.
[02:54] arynwyn: Riona: <she offers her arm to Hilda again, taking Daniel's hand in her other> I have no idea where we are... 
[02:58] Socks: Daniel: Don't worry about it.  Turq'll get us home.  <he re-shields them and heads towards one of the smaller Blue Dragons - "smaller" relative to the other dragons, anyway> Lord Turquoise!  I have Cobalt's daughter!  We need to escape.
Turq: Very good. <it says in human speech.  It smiles in a way that looks rather unsettling, but then again it is a large lizard with a mouth full of fangs.  It raises a claw and a glowing white disc forms in the air> Hurry! Into the portal!
[02:59] arynwyn: Riona: <she pulls her arm away from Hilda rather than release Daniel and steps toward the white disc, following Daniel's lead since she doesn't really know what to do or expect>
[03:02] Socks: Daniel: <steps into the disc>
Hilda: <does as well>
<On the other side of the portal is a ...jail cell?  Daniel looks around and blinks>
Daniel: Lord Turquoise, I believe this is the wrong...
<As soon as Riona's through, the portal disappears>
[03:04] arynwyn: Riona: <she sighs and releases Daniel's hand, going to slump against a wall> Betrayed?...
[03:06] Socks: Hilda: It would appear the Blues have their traitors as well.  <looking around> But I thought Turquoise was one of Azure's clutch...?
Daniel: <sighing harshly> He is.  <he hits the wall where the portal used to be hard.  The whole cell radiates magic, and the door is solid and thick wood> I ought to try blasting us out.
Hilda: <puts her hand on a wall and shakes her head> I wouldn't.  This is reflective magic.  It'd fry us.
[03:07] arynwyn: Riona: But why?... <she sounds miserable. Tears sting her eyes again> 
[03:08] Socks: Daniel: <turns and goes to her, wrapping his arms around her reassuringly> I don't know.
Hilda: <is quiet, studying things, occasionally cocking her head>
[03:09] arynwyn: Riona: <she buries her face in his shoulder again and bites her lip, trying to hold the sobs in> I'm sorry, Daniel. This is all my fault. You're going to die because of me. <her shoulders shake with the repressed emotions>
[03:12] Socks: Daniel: Shh, shh.  You don't know that.  We'll figure out a way out of here.  Besides, you think the Lady'll let anything happen to us?  <he pets her hair and kisses the top of her head>
Hilda: <looks to them and clears her throat> I'm guessing neither of you can make a portal?
Daniel: <shakes his head> I am not powerful enough for that sort of magic, and I have been Riona's only teacher.
[03:13] arynwyn: Riona: <she takes a deep, shaky breath, trying to calm herself. She wipes at her eyes> I could try. I'd never done that other spell before. I didn't even know it was a spell. I just sort of made it up. 
[03:15] Socks: Hilda: <she nods> Okay. I need you to be paying attention.  If you get this wrong, who knows where we'll end up.  <she certainly LOOKS the part of cranky old schoolmarm>
[03:15] arynwyn: Riona: <she sniffs, wipes at her eyes again, then nods, pulling away from Daniel> Alright, what do I do?
[03:17] Socks: Hilda: Close your eyes and focus on where you want to be.  See the exact location.  Smell it, hear it, feel its floor beneath your feet.  Now, imagine it's right on the other side of this wall.  All you need is a door to get there.
[03:18] arynwyn: Riona: <she closes her eyes and imagines the study at the Vane home, remembering as many details as she can. After a few moments, she raises her hand and imagines a white disc like Turq had made, but connects it to the study with a mental tunnel>
[03:22] Socks: Hilda: Good, good.  You must be the last one to go through, understand?  It will close behind you automatically.  Can you see the room clearly?  Can you picture yourself walking back and forth between this place and that?
[03:22] arynwyn: Riona: <she nods> Yes. <she opens her eyes slowly, staying focused> 
[03:23] Socks: Hilda: Let me go first.  I will come back if it is safe.  
Daniel: <looks between them as if not sure he trusts Hilda yet>
[03:24] arynwyn: Riona: <she gives Daniel and helpless look and shrugs a little, then returns her focus to the portal>

[03:30] Socks: Hilda: <goes in, waits a moment, then comes back out> It's safe enough.  It looks like a study of some sort?  Anyway, it's better than here.  <since, of course, she doesn't know what the Vane study looks like exactly.  She pops back through>
Daniel: <kisses Ree's cheek and goes through after Hilda>

[03:31] arynwyn: Riona: <follows after them and nearly collapses on the floor in gratitude of finally being free. The portal vanishes>

[03:34] Socks: Hilda: You did very well.  
Daniel: <wrapping his arms around her to prop her up> She's an excellent student.  
[03:34] arynwyn: Riona: What about everyone else? <she leans against Daniel> We have to let them know there's a traitor.

[03:37] Socks: Daniel: <he sighs> Yeah, we do.  
Maddy: <comes flying into the room> REE!!!!!!!!!!! <tackle-hugs, knocking Riona into Daniel and the both of them to the floor> YOU'RE HOME!! 
Daniel: Maddy! Jeezus!
Hilda: <laughs>
[03:38] arynwyn: Riona: <wraps her arms around Maddy tightly> I'm sorry I left. I was an idiot.

[03:41] Socks: Maddy: But you're back and you're not leaving, right?  Never, ever again?
Daniel: I may not ever let her out of the HOUSE again.  Not without me.
Hilda: Daniel, do you have a way to contact Azure?
Daniel: No, but Father does...somewhere...<wriggles out from the pile and starts digging around in the study> He's on the field.  Where's Mom?
Maddy: Aunt Rose's.  Father didn't want her here in case they came after us.
Daniel: ... <stops searching> And so you're here because....?
Maddy: I snuck back!  DUH!
